unable to configure the network card

Hello,

My network card and internet connection is down.
I get this msg in network settings: “unable to configure the network card bacause the kernel device is not present.”

I think something happened to my grub after I attached an USB-HDD and try to boot. No idea how to recover previous grub status where everything was working well including network card

Now it boots only when I disconnect the USB-HDD but network card is down.

Many thx for any help,Alex

Running SUSE 10.3 x64

There are two things to fix. One is the networking. The other is Grub.

Grub: Did you mount the USB hdd permanently [perhaps by using the problematic application “ntfs-config” or by mounting it with Yast Parttiioner or by editing a mount command into the filesystem table]?

Network: is your connection a wireless interface or a wired ethernet device? Give us a few more clues.

thanks for reply

  1. Grub: No YAST Partitioner,no NTFS-config. I just connected the USB-HDD (Seagate FreeAgent Pro) after booting, SUSE recognized it and mounted by itself. Then, I rebooted with the USB-HD still connected (not beacuse I wanted to reboot from USB-HD, just forgot it) and I get the error before starting SUSE: “error while loading grub”. I disconnect the USB-HD, reboot, fine. How to recover previous unchanged grub (before attaching USB HD)?

  2. No wireless, but standard gigabit ethernet embedded in the mainboard of my server, with double rj-45 socket.

I would like to post boot.msg, but have no right to post attachments.

From line 659 of boot.msg:
“Checking for network time protocol deamon (NTPD): dead
Can’t determine current runlevel”

thanks

also I forgot to mention that after connecting the USB-HD, I booted once from a systemrescue-cd and started partimage, just to check if the rescuecd works and if partimage recongnize the USB-HD (it didn’t)

Then I rebooted again with the USB-HD still connected.

After that, the network card was down.

OK I suggest you backup the current Grub menu with this command in a console:

sudo cp /boot/grub/menu.lst /boot/grub/menu.lst.backup

Then I suggest you the segment “Reinitialise and Reinstall Grug” from this tutorial to get a new Grub menu:
GRUB Boot Multiboot openSUSE Windows (2000, XP, Vista) using the Grub bootloader.

Regarding the network card, if it was a straighforward, worked-out-of-box, situation., then check this pictorial sequence to repair the NIC configuration, focusing on the option “Dynamic IP Setup I - The Suse/openSUSE Defaults. Pics 1 to 6 inclusive”. That was written fro 10.x with x <= 3. But it is still relevant to 11.0.
HowTo Configure a network card in Suse/openSUSE 10.x for LAN and Internet Access.

thanks for reply, problem still there → network card down].

I booted from SUSE DVD and enter Repair System and checked Kernel msg. Found this:

INTEL(R) PRO/1000 Network Driver - version 7.6.5-NAPI
ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:06:00.0[A] → GSI 18 (level, low) → IRQ 18
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:06:00 disabled
e1000: probe of 0000:06:00.0 failed with error -2

ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:06:00.1** → GSI 19 (level, low) → IRQ 19
ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:06:01 disabled
e1000: probe of 0000:06:00.1 failed with error -2

so it seems to be not a network card config problem [after booting], but a PCI interrupt problem [during booting]. No idea how to solve it.

Thanks, Alex**

problem partially solved installing a new network card. SUSE install it automatically. Fine, Internet on!

Maybe the onboard-LANs are gone, have to contact the server company.
Alex

And maybe it needs a driver. What’s the card as described by the following command:

sudo /sbin/lspci | grep thernet

The kernel in openSUSE 10.3 is very very old. Many more devices are
supported in the current version of openSUSE 11.1. My suggestion is to
download the Live CD image for 11.1 in 32- or 64-bit version (I expect
your CPU is a 64-bit variety.) and try it. Getting and implementing a
driver for you network device in 10.3 would not be worth the effort.
