New installation of 12.1. I am trying to add the packman repository and just can’t get it to work. Using yast -> add repositories I enter the location Index of /suse/12.1/ and wait. And wait. And wait. Eventually, I get an error message that the site is unreachable. aborting the process does not work, I have to use Ctrl-Alt-Esc and kill the window.
I tried using zypper following the instructions in the on line help and got errors until I finally tried adding the .repo file to the command line even though the instructions said it was not necessary. The error messages than changed and said the site is not available. I did get zypper to add the vlc repository in anticipation of installing the libdvdcss file and then disabled it until I can get packman working.
If I use firefox to access the packman address I can see the files and can move deeper into the directory structure so I don’t think the packman site is down.
I shut down the firewall and retried zypper with no success even though the firewall was up when the vlc repository was added.
I waited a day to see if the packman site really did have a problem. I assumed that 24 hours would be long enough for them to realize and correct any problems on their end. They are, after all, pretty much on the ball. I still can’t add the repository.

I tried your URL and got the same response.
I re-installed zypper and tried using it. I get a Connection Failed error - Resolving host timed out.
Using firefox, I was able to go into the x86_64 directory and download a rpm file so I know I can get to the site.
I noticed that in one of the error messages from zypper there was an extra slash at the beginning of the directory string. It said
http://packman.inode.at//suse/12.1/packman.repo
So, I retried but replaced the slash with a space. Zypper added the repository but listed the URL as just the domain, without the suse/12.1 Of course that didn’t work so I edited the URL using yast. When I tried to install a file using yast I again got a timeout and the process failed.
Wondering if perhaps it was something to do with packman, I used yast to show me a list of community repositories. I selected the nvidia site knowing it would not be used as I have an ATI video card. That process failed with an error that said
Adding repository nVidia Graphics Drivers failed
|] Error trying to read from "ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.1//"
History
- Timeout exceeded when accessing "ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/12.1//content".
Notice the double slash in the error message.
I tried to add the nVidia repository using zypper but there is no .repo file that I could see on that site. I did download a file just to prove I could. Zypper says it defaults to a .repo file. Why must I include it on the command line?
Why does yast look for a /content file? Does not yast act as a frontend for zypper?
I’m thinking that the fact I can access and download files from these sites indicates that my network/firewall/internet settings are correct. The double slashes in the error messages seem to me to say there is a problem in my software. That said, if yast is not using zypper, if there are two separate programs accessing the sites, it wouldn’t seem it is my software.
Yes I have. In fact, I did a clean install, using 32 bit, on my Toshiba laptop. I’m using 64 bit on this one. I am experiencing exactly the same problem with it. Now, 11.3 worked flawlessly on this computer. Never tried it on the laptop. Has something changed between the versions that would make my router not accept it? I can’t imagine what, but…
In desperation, I logged in as root. I was able to use zypper to add and remove repositories although I couldn’t get yast to work. So I created another user account and tried it but it would not work. Going back to root, I tried to add some software. The system timed out while trying to refresh the whatever it is it refreshes. I tried to use zypper to install a package. No go. I got errors about curl. It finally occurred to me that perhaps curl is an application so I did a man curl. Sure enough, it bragged about how complex and hard to use it is and how it is used by yast and zypper and all so that’s why both utilities fail to work.
I noticed that curl did not mention anything about rpm, so I tried a --test version of an installation. It reported that it failed only because a dependency was not satisfied. It mentioned a file name that matched a library which I found in the Essentials directory. I did a query on that library and it did indeed have the requested file. I assume I must install that library first and then the application.
In any event, I have determined that the problem exists with some of the software on both this machine and my laptop.
The only thing I can think of that might have a bearing is the fact that I have to disable ipv6 as my provider doesn’t recognize it. I also am using PPPoa instead of PPPoe although I can’t imagine that would cause a problem.
caf2946, you mentioned using google’s DNS. It’s sure not a problem to change. Should I do a Whois to get them? On this subject, when I added my usual locations, I noticed that the fields were blank. Yet I could still poke around the web. How is that possible? Maybe I should just delete the entries I have?
I’ve looked around this site and I can’t find anything about anyone else having the same problem. I’ve spent way, way too much time on this already!
Thanks! Disabling IOv6 was one of the first things I did.
I just changed DNS settings and there is no change.
Perhaps I should just swap out this drive, go back to 11.3 and wait for 12.2. Or actually, 12,3. It seems like the 3 versions always work really great. 10.3 was good. 11.3 was good. I hate to wait that long though.
I’m tired. I’m going to bed. Thanks for your help.
I used rpm to add a library and a software program. It went smooth enough after I figured out how to do it. It was pretty slow though and of course it won’t be very user friendly for keeping up with security updates.
When I did the install, I changed the software selections by adding gnome to the list. Gnome doesn’t run very well on this system. I thought perhaps there was a problem with configuration so I installed a new drive and did a fresh clean install, letting the install program do what ever it wanted to do. After that, I still have the same problems!
I just can’t figure this out!
Is there somewhere else I can get help? Is there somewhere I can/should report this so it can be figured out for the next release?
I thought about installing 11.4 but it’s a mess getting the video to work! That’s why I stayed with 11.3 for so long.

No, because this not a generic problem, it only affects you. It must be
something in your network. You installing fresh and having the same problem
proves it.
