Unable to access GRUB even from rescue CD

Hi,
I updated tumbleweed 2 days ago (tumbleweed-cli), powered on the PC today and I can’t boot anymore. I’m stuck on the string “Grub_” with a blinking underscore. I tried to boot from rescue and live cd but every version that I tried was not able to boot or even access GRUB. I tried:

  • openSUSE-Leap-15 2-Rescue-CD-x86 64-Build31 223-Media
  • openSUSE-Tumbleweed-Rescue-CD-x86_64-Snapshot20201030-Media
  • openSUSE-Tumbleweed-KDE-Live-x86_64-Snapshot20201030-Media

By writing the ISO images to USB using Etcher, unetbootin, rufus and imageUsb by passmark.

The CPU usage seems to be very high on the GRUB loading screen because the fan start spinning fast after a few seconds.
Ubuntu 17.04 (just an old ISO file I had) boots correctly from the same USB pendrive.
Opensuse tumbleweed is installed on a dedicated hard drive, which is working fine (except for the boot of course).

Do you have any idea on how to proceed?

My first guess would be that your Tumbleweed system is suffering from Bug 1178278

As far as I know, that only happens when booting from a partition. It should not normally happen booting from the MBR or with UEFI.

The live media use “syslinux” for booting (unless this is a UEFI system) so they should not be affected by the grub bug. The other possibility is that you have some kind of hardware issue.

Thank you for the response! The system is not UEFI.

I ended up restoring a backup I had of tumbleweed 20201028. After that I booted the ubuntu live image and used chroot to login to opensuse and I reinstalled grub from there. Finally I used YAST to check grub settings and to reintstall it.

About the opensuse live images that didn’t boot, the live image of snapshot 20201104 still doesn’t boot from usb and I still have no explanation. Debian 10.6.0 boots fine with the same hardware.
