The remote printer can appear in cups without the driver being installed. Make certain you have your printer driver installed.
If this is an HP Printer then one typically only needs to install hplip and the rest is pretty easy.
But if its another manufacturer’s printer, then I likely can not help and someone else will need to chime in. Be certain, though, to check out the open printing site for information on configuring your printer: OpenPrinting | The Linux Foundation
yes I already loaded hplip. Under yast it says the printer is ready
but I get an error every time I try to print. Also under cups if I try to change any options I get a blank web page.
yes hp printer. Also test prints fail from yast and cups.
hmmm …
re-reading your first post:
I don’t know what quote means.
I’ve successfully setup up a network printer using IPP where one Linux PC acted as the server for other Linux PCs and also for winXP PCs to print. I’ve also successfully connected to our new HP Photosmart Premium C309a as a standone printer on our WLAN.
But I have no idea as to what a “remote desktop using cups” setup might be.
yes ipp it is the protocal cups uses.
it just means “common Unix Printing System”
When I go to //localhost:631 I get the cups browser the printer is there and I have
ipp://Suse11-Home:631/printers/HP_Deskjet_D4300_series
in the cups browser.
But if i put that address in my browser it searches the internet and says not found instead of searching my local network like it should.
Suse11-Home is the Desktop the Printer has been installed on successfully
I just mean the other Desktop is the printserver.
oh yeah in konquerer it says ipp protocol not supported if i put in ipp address not sure why.
While I did install hplip, I also used YaST as my front end to setup printing. I used the network wizard, which called the hp software as appropriate.
Some silly questions. … I assume you have port 631 open? I assume you have Suse11-Home properly defined as an ip address? I confess I typically just type in the ip address and don’t mess around with name assignments.
They are both home pcs so I shut the suse firewall.
I used the host name because they were using dynamic ips.
I could try to figure how to reserve an ip in coyote linux if it is necessary.
But I am trying to say is that both cups and yast see it but a test print will not work from either.
Also when i was playing around i was able to publish it in cups now i can’t any more if i hit publish print or reconfigure any options I get a blank web page.
Glad I kept a backup copy of my default cupsd.conf.
I overwrote the one I edited with the backup. and set it up through yast instead of cups this time.
When yast set it up Now it works.
Only annoying thing is it asks for a password every time.
