uefi or legacy?

To install an older version at 42.3 which option should i use in PC setup
uefi or legacy
For boot to work what else should I adjust in setup?

That depends on your hardware (in act firmware). When it is a legacy BIOS system, you can only install legacy.

When it is an UEFI system, you can only install UEFI. But there are UEFI systems that can be switched to legacy. And then of course the first line above is the one to follow.

Why the question? This should work automagicaly.

When I have a choice, I use UEFI.

However, if I had a computer that came with legacy booting Windows, then I would continue to use legacy rather than reinstall Windows.

My current desktop is switchable between legacy booting (or CSM as the BIOS calls it, and UEFI). It came with Windows 8 in UEFI mode, so I have stayed with UEFI. My wife has a similar computer, but it came with Windows 7 in legacy mode so she has kept it at legacy booting.

For your system, you will have to decide.

If legacy is supported, I don’t know that there is any performance difference.
As for security…One of UEFI’s original design goals was to address theoretical attacks during pre-boot… But I’m aware of only one proof of concept that has been published. In other words, a pre-boot attack is still hard to do today and requires specific conditions… It’s not considered to be a significant threat to most.

But,
Of course if what you do on your laptop is sensitive, then you will want to go above and beyond to secure your laptop… After all, how difficult is it really to install using UEFI vs legacy BIOS?

Try uefi. If it does not work try harder. If failing again consider giving away your hardware.

My PC BIOS can be set to Legacy or efni
As I do not know which position is right I did not change and tried to install 42.3
Installation goes to the end automatically but the system does not start
I moved to Legacy, did a new install, but the problem remains.
Now show

Booting from local disk …
Missing OS

So should I expect the installation to succeed whether using Legacy or Efmi?

Too bad this option

In fact you should not even try to intsall 42.3. But I assume you have your reason for it.

In my business I use Dbase IV Plus and no more works in news openSuse versions
I don’t try in others linux distributions
