It has been a long time since I tried to boot a live system and have had many updates. I did zypper dup today, so I am all caught up. I am trying to boot from a usb drive and have multiple problems. Using f12 to bring up the boot sequence screen, I do not see the option to boot from a usb drive or cdrom/dvd. I changed the boot status several times. I turned secure boot on and off. I switched from uefi to lecacy and back several times . I tried mixing that setting with switching secure boot on and off. Sometimes the usb shows up (and cdrom/dvd) and sometimes it doesn’t.
I honestly don’t remember which settings let the usb show for booting, but after a reboot and no changes to the boot parameters, the option to boot from usb disappeared again. What settings should allow me to boot from usb? Also, booting from all usb ports is enabled.
In this case, I am trying to boot Tails. In the past, I have booted Tails, Mint and openSuSe from usb.
When you are talking about using F12 to alter boot sequence, you talk about the firmware (BIOS) of your system. There isn’t much that openSUSE (or any other operating system) can do with that.
Hi
That would indicate the incorrect process to write the image to the USB device has been used. Did you check the downloaded image with it’s respective checksum, md5, sha256 etc?
Hi
AFAIK it will only show ‘bootable’ devices either Legacy or UEFI if it detects a bootflag marked or ef00 partition. Hence it sounds like the write process was incorrect.
You might be correct. My experience is that the BIOS will show e.g. the possibility to boot from a CD/DVD even if nothing is in it. But of course not all BIOSes are equal.
After I posted, I realized I had not tried to boot from the usb using my laptop. The laptop has fully updated Tumbleweed. It booted Tails with no problem. Of course, I had pressed F12 to bring up the one-time boot menu. The menu showed both the cdrom/dvd and the usb drives. I selected usb and it booted to Tails very quickly.
I rebooted and pressed F12 to check the boot mode to see if I could set my desktop to the same parameters and boot the usb on the desktop. The boot mode was set to: Legacy; Secure Boot Off. I changed the desktop to those settings and rebooted again. When I press F12, there are options for both Legacy and UEFI. Under the Legacy group, it shows usb drive and cdrom/dvd. Under the UEFI section of the menu, it shows the usb drive by name. The usb will boot from either menu selection.
Since the usb will boot either from the Legacy section or the UEFI section, I’m guessing it was the Secure Boot On setting that kept the usb from even appearing as an option.
