Ubuntu 16.04lts is good to go for some time to come. You can run a number of desktops there. I have cinnamon, gnome,kde,mate and solus running just fine. Having
said that I recently tried to get Tumbleweed to work right and just could not, so I installed leap 42.2 and after some tinkering which I enjoy, everything is working great.
I am using the kde desktop but installed the gnome as well no complaints. I like the idea of having suse because who knows what ubuntu is going to end up doing??
I really really like Yast. Its better than synaptic because its harder to err when installing from yast.
