Twinview NVidia not working

here’s my story:
I have a OpenSuse 11 on a dell gx260/270 with a NVidia Quadro NVS dualhead card, running on two Eizo L675 flats.

the problem is I can only get one screen to work, plus in yast/sax2 - hardware - Monitor & card config = I get test fail when trying to run both of the screens.

I’m scratching my head here becuz i dont know what gives. Btw my skill level is between beginner and intermediate to be honest with everyone.

Let me know how I can t-shoot this issue. By the way I think i’m running xorg X11 7.3 something but I’m curious about older/newer version like 7.4 devel****

I also noticed that Nvidia drivers dont play to nice but what do i know about that maybe I can uninstall (howto) and install the Nouvou drivers I’ve seen people mention on other corners of the web?

Well I’m throughing myself at your mercy help help, Need the dualhead/twinview feature to work it’s cramping my style other wise.

Btw XMMS media player - really rox!

Hi
Have you installed the nvidia driver via 1-click? If not I recommend
the hard way, else follow the easy way here;
Nvidia

This is my canned response for doing it the ‘Hard Way’ :slight_smile:

Download the driver for your arch from;
Nvidia Unix Drivers

If you don’t have the kernel source etc installed then;

sudo zypper in kernel-source linux-kernel-headers kernel-syms
sudo zypper in -t pattern devel_basis devel_C_C++

Press ctrl+alt+F1 and login as your user :slight_smile:

su -
init 3

cd to the Nvidia Unix Driver you downloaded

sh NV*.run -q
sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia
init 5 && exit
ctrl+alt+F1
exit
ctrl+alt+F7

The ctrl+alt+F7 gets you back to the GUI (X session).

Now after a kernel update, you don’t need to run the sax2 command, just
the others to get to run level 3, rebuild the driver and exit.

tried that didn’s work?!

Hi
So what is the output from;

/sbin/lspci -nnv |grep VGA

ok here’s the scoop: during sh NVIDIA-LINUX-BLA-BLA-BLA.run -q file i get this:

  1. no matching precompiled kernel ineterface was found on nvidia ftp site, will try to compile for me.
  2. the says error kernel header file @ /lib/modules/2.6.25.5.-1.1-pae/build/include/linux/kernel.h dont exist.

3.install failed back to console :frowning:

so my kernel source isn’t available how do i get it back on the system?

Hi
Run through those zypper commands at the beginning :slight_smile:

Malcom - can you believe that my suse 11 box still complians that it can’t find the kernel source specifically the headers. Now my question is this: at run level 3 I’m not getting through to the web/ftp sites to download the kernel headers. shouldn’t I be in run level 4 - I’m thinking that it will give me working network connectivity?!

also I do have the dvd can’t I just YAST this darn thingie and get back the headers?

also keep in mind that the C++ devel sudo script reported that it was installed and nothing needed to be done.

Also what command do I use to check 1. what kernel specs I have 2. and what’s it’s location?

And just think I have more to ask after this excercise! I guess you can call me grass hopper going forward…

:slight_smile:

Hi
You need to install from the internet, as you probably have updated the
kernel? Your internet connection should be active at 3? Try pinging
google.com? If not try restarting the network;

sudo /sbin/rcnetwork restart

To check your running kernel;

uname -a

To see if the source is installed and same as running kernel;

ls -la /usr/src/linux

For example on this system;

uname -a

Linux kermit-opensuse 2.6.25.16-0.1-default #1 SMP 2008-08-21 00:34:25
+0200 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

ls -la /usr/src/linux

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2008-09-11 08:52 /usr/src/linux ->
linux-2.6.25.16-0.1

If you have a GUI running at init 5, you could always use YaST to
install, just search on the names for the first line, then switch to
patterns for the others on the second line.

You might also try the following commands;

sudo zypper ref
sudo zypper lu
sudo zypper up

The first command refreshes the repositories, the second lists any
updates, the third will apply the updates.

Ok I knew about uname -r - gave me version info and such, i didnt know where the linux folder was at (thanks)

so now for nitty gritty
sudo command 1 & 2 where ok

but wow was 3 interesting, it happens to be updating as i type this.

and know that you clarified that the updates needs to come from the web, it explains a posibility. You see I had the dvd in the rom so my updates may have been coming from that source instead of web.

You know the Nvidia install doc mentions something about an interface for Nvidia driver and linux kernel - so I ponder this for a few minutes - start to wonder if the ld - linker is broken? perhaps failing to provide a bridge between driver and kernel!? - In other words the soldier(driver) can cross bridge(interface linker) to report situation (update/install) to Colonal (linux kernel) is that about sums it up?

Hi
Well hopefully the updates will help you compile the nvidia module :slight_smile:

Hmmm, never read that, maybe it was broken?? ldconfig -p |grep nvidia
should show you?

Ok Malcom - the sudo zipper up did the trick - it took like 45 mins on a 1.25 gig mem/2.40 intel cpu but was worth the wait.

The nvidia drivers loaded 3D acceleration/ plus working options for dualview. and I span my taskbar accross both screens.

Now I was wondering what if i had 4 - 6 screens? then what do i do? would nvidia know how to manage something like this?

just to give you some extra info, I’m coming from a windows xp based financial environment, so naturally I’m looking at extreme types of configuration scenarios, like 6 screens working off of 1 pc running 4 to 8 gigs of memory.

typical applications like citrix/bloomberg/brokertec/espeed etc…

Trading/ivestment banking type stuff…

but anyway, you are going to make a savy linux user out of me yet. and I guess you guaged that I can figure some things out on my own - which means you dont have to waste too much time filling in the blanks with me…

by the way THANK YOU, for holding my hand through this process i greatly apprieciate that.

ok now the next order of business is getting samba/firewall/proxy to function correctly on this pc. the samba i’ve done many years ago like during redhat 4 days… but by hand you know the files edit way. Howeva, the graphical way is much faster and you get a look at what you’re really trying to do I like that, but let me read the mans on all of these three items…

also…If I could only get my blackberry to work by syncing to evolution &/or thunderbird I would be a very very happy camper!!! but what I’m thinking is finding some kind of java based solution for that puzzle, becuz i’m thinking that with the new blackberry storm device being introduced into the market people will want to customize and personalize, especially the linux world…

ok I’ll keep exploring my new suse 11 box and find new things to learn in the process - I’m sure i’ll have questions for you - I’ll try to make them creative and challenging as to have fun resolving issues.

it’s been a great pleasure…

by the way i kinda go back to the slackware days where it took a person about two weeks on i386 to get pass the isntallation. Suse was about 6 disc back then, wow has she evolved I’m very impressed…

cheers mate,
Ralphie

Hi
I’m sure it will handle as many cards as you have slots… just when
running sax you would increment the number for cards eg if you had four
and all nvidia;

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia 1=nvidia 2=nvidia 3=nvidia

Have a look here for samba and others
http://www.swerdna.net.au/linux.html
and use the search feature of the forum :slight_smile:

I have a 8830e but only backup via an application called “barry” it
also charges the Blackberry and can use for dial up modem (Which works,
but disconnects after a minute, a problem I need to work on sigh)

Glad I could help, and again welcome to the forum and openSUSE.
