TW KDE Dual Monitor Setup Issue: Primary Monitor Set to HDMI, But Windows and Panel Stay on Secondary Screen

Hello everyone,

I’m using openSUSE Tumbleweed with the KDE Plasma desktop environment, and I’m facing an issue with my dual monitor setup. My configuration consists of:

  • Primary monitor: A notebook screen (laptop built-in display)
  • Secondary monitor: An external monitor connected via HDMI

I’ve set the HDMI-connected external monitor as the primary one in the system settings, but despite this, the taskbar and application windows remain on the secondary screen (the laptop display). It feels as if the primary and secondary monitors are reversed, even though I have explicitly set the HDMI monitor as the primary display.

Has anyone else encountered a similar issue? Is there a way to fix this and ensure that the taskbar and windows are properly displayed on the designated primary monitor (HDMI)?

Did you confuse yourself? Your descrition itself tells complete opposite configurations.

Without any further clear description, it is not possible to reproduce. Switching primary monitor on laptop systems with external monitor works here.

Sorry, I was so tired I mistyped!

    Primary monitor: HDMI
    Secondary monitor: Laptop monitor

The description then was right.

Update: I don’t know if it was after updating or adding / removing panel, now kde behaves correctly.
I apologize if I’m not able to tell you exactly how I solved the issue.
