Tv as monitor, settings acting weird

Hello everybody, my apologies for the wordy post, but want to provide the right info.

So I am running opensuse slow roll on a 2017 iMac that I got pretty cheap due to a cracked screen. It’s a very powerful machine considering its age (4.2/4.5 quadcore i7, 64 ram, 2 tb SSD, ). So I’m using a 43” Hisense 4k tv I just bought new, and it’s connected with a hdmi/usb c cable. I’m currently driving Slow Roll (might switch to kalpa).

When I boot with Wayland and there are black bars on the top and bottom that aren’t there under x11. Additionally, the settings screen keeps changing the resolution options. Specifically it gives me a 4096x2160, (256:135)- which is an aspect ratio that I’ve never seen before- but then that disappears and the highest is 3840x2160 (16:9). The reshares rate also changes back and forth from 25, 30 and 60.

There is also noticeable mouse lag which I’ve never seen when using a dual display mode. It seems to improve when I when I change to highest available resolution.

Opensuse / KDE allows me to make the screen primary but then loses it after waking from sleep (which takes a long time). I reboot, and there it is. Additionally it only allows for screen mirroring. This is a big problem because the goal is to hide the computer / broken display behind the tv and possibly taking the broken display off completely as it’s held by tape.

Is this just how it is with a tv, or is tit the video card? Is there anything I can do to try to resolve this issue? Thank you in advance!

Also, if goes to sleep and I catch it quick, it will wake the tv up. But I have to put the password on the iMac screen, even though the tv is naked as primary.

I’m hopeful that, if nothing else, removing the display altogether will force it to make it primary.

Still learning how to work this forum. Can you edit posts ? Also somehow I solved my own question, lol, but it’s NOT solved and it won’t let me change it.

You already flagged your own post (the opening post of this thread). That gets a message to moderators.

No, you cannot edit posts after the edit time limit has elapsed. The moderators could edit it for you, but they cannot read you mind so they don’t know what changes you want.

Simplest would be for you to add another reply to this thread indicating what you want.

I also unchecked the solution flag

It’s not clear to me if a problem remains that is unrelated to posting to the thread.

Thank you everyone!

While the bars remain on Wayland and the resolution still acts wonky, the mouse issue has been resolved by putting the tv in game mode.

For 4K @ 60 Hz you need HDMI 2.0+ and compatible cable. ILL laptop is not compatible with that spec.
