When I hit ctrl+alt+backspace I get an extremely loud sound that practically blows out my speakers and my eardrums. How can I turn off that sound or at least reduce the volume substantially?

I’m going to take a guess that the loud sound is coming through
the PC speaker. Simple solution: blacklist it.
Edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and add a line:
blacklist pcspkr
See if that works for you.
In /etc/X11/xorg.conf :
Option "ZapWarning" "off"
instead of “on” .
HTH .

i think the best question to ask and get answered is why you have to
use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace in the first place?
i think i used last year, once…if you have stability problems
requiring you to use C+A+B, then you need to find and fix THAT problem…
on the other hand if you are using it instead of clicking “change
user” (or whatever), why?
