I updated a laptop with Tumbleweed with zypper dup and then rebooted. Now it will not boot. The power LED and the keyboard light up, but the monitor does not show anything. I cannot enter the BIOS because nothing is displayed. The laptop does play a short ~2 second audio jingle. I have never seen a failure mode like this before.
Is this just a hardware failure that just happened to occur immediately after updating?

If even the BIOS doesn’t display and you hear bootup sounds then that sounds like a display screen failure on the laptop … not sure if this is “automatic” or not but can you plug it into an outside display with hdmi or something temporarily? I seem to remember this “just working” on windows many moons ago … not sure if linux is the same way
If this never happened before, check the laptop/BIOS manual. Some manufacturers use sound/beep codes to notify the user about different hardware/software issues.
Try removing battery, sometimes it helps to reset internal state.
Thanks. The jingle is Lenovo’s smart beep. There’s a smartphone app that translates my code to 0288 (computer display error), so it looks like a hardware problem.
