I update tumbleweed every day. Today there were 6500 updates in “sudo zypper dup”. I am curious as to what that was all about?

Because 6500 is nearly all the files there are in my tumbleweed. A couple of hundred is typical.
Did someone modify every tumbleweed package in a couple of days?

Everytime the compiler or core components/libraries (glibc, gcc,…) gets updated, all packages (the complete distribution) needs to be rebuild. Regularly. This happens and happended once or twice every year, since years. This is the small price you pay for running a rolling release distribution.
I think a new compiler makes the same executable file from the source code as the previous one unless some new feature is purposely included.
New glibc versions introduce new functions, ABIs and more. All packages get rebuild to make use of the new features/functions/bug fixes/…

As these “big” updates happen regularly, you might ask another question: why has this system 6500 packages?
It depends…but there are some basic mitigations which reduce the overall amount of packages on every system.
- Skim regularly through your app list. Do i need this app? No? Uninstall it. Do you need a special pattern? No? Remove it…
- How to properly uninstall a package? Do not simply remove a package via
zypper rm <package>. Uninstall all the deps which came with the installation of the package (and are no longer needed) viazypper rm --clean-deps <package>(the same can be achived by setting the checkbox in Myrlyn to remove unneeded deps on removal of a package)
See this easy example. A package gets installed and installs 8 deps:

zypper dup. Don’t simply usezypper dupbutzypper dup --no-recommends. You don’t even need to type this parameter everytime you upgrade your machine. Simply adapt zypp.conf, zypper.conf or set the checkbox in Myrlyn.
These are easy but basic recommendations. They don’t need more time but saves you alot of headscratches every year, when you wonder why your system wants to update 6500 packages…
