I’ve been having this problem for a while, flashing the screen. I’m not sure when, but the situation is changing with the kernel and Mesa updates. And I noticed that after Mesa version 19.2 the problem became much more serious.I was forced to install the Nvidia driver, but even now there is a slight problem, for example, if I opened a google or any white thing like pdf document whit Okular.I prefer to use Nouveau but blinking for two seconds makes it almost impossible to use the computer, after Mesa 19.2.6 it got really bad:’(
Can anyone tell me how to look for the problem, some solution.

Just ideas:
1-try modesetting DDX instead of nouveau or NVidia
2-disable compositing
3-in systemsettings > display > compositor, try other rendering backend options
