I have been trying to install tumbleweed for a couple of days now, but I’m running into the same issue every time…
When I try to install with the tumbleweed ISO my Drive does not get recognized in the installer and switching tty and running dmesg reveals the error: nvme: controller is down; will reset: CSTS=0xffffffff, PCI_STATUS=0xffff. The suggestion to fix this is to boot with the additional parameters nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 pcie_aspm=off I did that but nothing changed.
I thought I fixed this issue by using the leap ISO to install and then upgrade to tumbleweed. And this does work for some time (a couple of minutes/package installations) but at some point the system freezes for a few seconds. After the freeze I can still execute a few commands but most applications/commands won’t work. dmesg delivers the same error message and possible solution as before, but again the fix doesn’t work.
I guess this is an issue with the nvme and tumbleweeds kernel, but I have no idea how to fix it…
The drive is a SK Hynix BC501 (HFM512GDJTNG-8310A).
Could be a hardware issue, but honestly I would not understand why, because leap and other distros (been running fedora and nixos before) are running flawlessly…
I suggest to search bugzilla.opensuse.org for a report with similar symptoms and do as recommended there if you find one. Otherwise, create a new report there. My 3 NVME PCs are running TW smoothly on installations originally made years ago and always online upgraded using zypper. One I upgraded to include kernel 6.6.2 just a few hours ago, smooth as silk.
Developers give inadequate attention to bugs they don’t know about. They largely depend on bug discoverers to appropriately report those they find. Few developers fish in these forums to find things to do.
