Good day, I’m using Tumbleweed for the first time coming from Leap 15.5.
There are some things that are still not set but the question here is about almost constant sound notifications. I don’t see any visual massages and I would like to find what is triggering the beeping.
From where should I start with diagnosing the issue?
You can try to switch the off the notification sounds one by one via systemsettings (if you are using Plasma). If you use another DE, you need to find the respective notification settings.
I went through all System Settings > Apps & Windows > Notifications > Application Settings and one by one switched off everyone that was marked with speaker icon. Then hit Apply button. I continued with the System Services as well.
I tried to figure out what is the message sound going to the System Notifications tab. I went through all of them. The closest match was the Print Error.
My printer is plugged through USB. Unplugging it stops the beeping. Apparently the printer is triggering the hidden beeping or it is a coincidence. But it doesn’t show a pop-up error message.
It starts with the start of the machine with no programs loaded.
It dies as it starts and after sometime again starts.
Initially I thought it might be some update but today on the afternoon I got a pop-up message to do updates in Discover, which I did. It was quiet for about 3 hours and then started about an hour before I opened this topic.
At the moment it stopped again. The printer is plugged-in. So it is not the reason for it.
The sound is a single beep. It goes no matter if I do anything on the machine or it is idle. When the screen is locked I haven’t noticed.
So, I’m curious … what if you log out and let the machine sit at the default GUI user login screen - any beeps?
If the beeps continue when you are NOT logged in, this would be an interesting test:
Shut down (power off) the machine (do not simply reboot)
Now, power up the machine
At the GRUB boot menu, use the Down Arrow key to move away from the default boot option. This will stop the “count-down” to auto-boot.
Okay, the idea here is to let the machine sit at the GRUB menu, and to not boot any operating system (but it’s powered on). Let the machine sit for a while.
Any Beeps now?
If yes, then my thought is something related to the BIOS or some other machine oddity, hardware related. I’ve had this happen with my desktop machine a year or two ago … it was BIOS related.
Yesterday before my last post the beeping stopped. I worked for about an hour more and it happened 5-6 times during that period. At the moment I use the laptop on battery and there is no beeping, but nothing is connected to it.
After going through all the notification sounds, now when it is quiet, I think that the beeping corresponds to the “Device plugged in” “device-added” sound.
Update from today.
I powered up the laptop on the morning. USB mouse and the printer are first plugged-in, then the power cable and last is pushed the power button. Everything was normal by the time I logged on Tumbleweed. Started the printer. After a minute the beeping started again - not as intensive as on Friday, but still it was here. I removed this time the mouse cable, did not touch the printer one. Beeping stopped. The PC is working already 2 hours and there is no beeping.
I followed Gogalthorp advice and wiggled the both usb cables to see if the beeping will start again. Nothing everything is quiet and working.
Is there any command by which when the beeping is on I can check what is connecting to the system? Should there be a log file or something which can give me a hint?
