Tumbleweed - freeze on startup

My TW often freezes after startup, i.e. after password login Gnome desktop appears but mouse cursor is frozen.

I had the same issue in Ubuntu 16.10.

My laptop is an HP Elitebook Intel® Core™ i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz × 4, 15.6 GiB.

lspci reports: Intel Corporation Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0b),

and, VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Mars [Radeon HD 8730M] (rev ff)

Anyone know of a solution to this problem?

as a first guess this sounds like intel gpu problem, have you tried any of the fixes?
1 - determine which driver your using grep -P “(L|Unl)oading” /var/log/Xorg.0.log the one that is not unloaded is the one in use.
2 - fixes to try - if your not using modesetting try that, otherwise look up uxa vs sna issue and specify in 20-intel.conf

No one?

Could this be an application startup order issue?

Or, a wireless connection issue, i.e. TW wants to download updates but wireless connection is not yet active?

Updates are not that automatic unless you set them that way

OK

Is there a recommended way to set update timing?

No up to you but you the default is to chack for updates at log in or some fixed period. In any case this will not stop startup. It is something else causing the problem. Since you had the same issue on Ubuntu I’d look at your hardware, Video card maybe??

Yes, I have a noticed an issue with Radeon during the boot process, as if there is a driver problem.

Is there a Radeon driver available for TW?

Eventually, the boot process does complete, though +/-50% of the time the system will freeze.

Takes two or three reboots, before I get a stable running system.
