Hello, I have problems with my colour printer Kyocera ECOSYS P5021cdn.For about 6 months now I can no longer print in colour, only monochrome can be printed. I removed the configuration via YAST and set it up again with the original .PPD file from the manufacturer. The printer is connected via socket://IP-Address:9100
OS: opensuse Tumbleweed
Kernel: 5.19.7-1-default
print server: CUPS
A test print from a Windows machine shows that the printer can print in colour.
For the moment I am at a loss as to which screw I should turn.
I would be very grateful for any ideas.
Best regards
bastler0815
I’m not familiar with that particular printer, but a few pointers to check.
Has the printer ever printed in colour from Tumbleweed?
You have the correct PPD file for the model (not such a silly question as it may appear)?
Prints in monochrome from all applications or just a specific application?
Any hints to the cause to be found in the cups error log? ( /var/log/cups/error_log )
You can get more verbose error logging by setting “LogLevel debug” see line #6 of “/etc/cups/cupsd.conf”, you’ll need to restart cups for that to take effect.
sudo systemctl restart cups
Hopefully others more familiar with this printer may give more advice.

Hi tannington,
Has the printer ever printed in colour from Tumbleweed?
Yes
You have the correct PPD file for the model (not such a silly question as it may appear)?
pretty sure…
Prints in monochrome from all applications or just a specific application?
tested with okular and LibreOffice Writer, both without color.
I have set the log level to “debug” and will test.
Many thanks for your help
Hi,
Any hints to the cause to be found in the cups error log? ( /var/log/cups/error_log )
found this in my /var/log/cups/error_log
CreateProfile failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
CreateDevice failed: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:The name org.freedesktop.ColorManager was not provided by any .service files
Printer drivers are deprecated and will stop working in a future version of CUPS. See https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/103
Not sure if this is the cause of my problem. If so, I find it very worrying that opensuse does not seem to have a solution.

Use the lpoptions command to report on the current settings…
https://www.cups.org/doc/options.html
lpoptions -p <printername> -l
Which driver is in use?
sudo egrep -i "name|model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*

If I want to change the colour mode “ColorModel/Color mode: CMYK *Gray” (with YAST) to CMYK, this is not possible.
It is set to mono (gray) color mode. Change it to color with lpoptions…

Try as explained above, or for global settings use the CUPS web interface using a browser “localhost:631/printers”, select the printer > Set Default Options

whether this is also displayed via the web frontend (sorry i’m a german user)
As I noted at the beginning, my problems are possibly related to:

Ok, it was worth a shot (and definitely required for color printing anyway).
As I noted at the beginning, my problems are possibly related to:

Best to upload lengthy output to susepaste.org and share the link to it here. There is also a suspaste command (install package of the same name) that allows convenient uploading of output to this hosted environment.
susepaste -n "<title>" -e "<expiry in minutes>" -f "text" /path/to/file
- FWIW, I found this blog describing setting up CUPS for use with a Kyocera P5021CDN model. It was from Arch Linux user, and points to a slightly different PPD to the one you’re using…
Kyocera ECOSYS P5021cdn.PPD - aur.git - AUR Package Repositories
Not sure if that will make a difference with the color printing though.
I also note that they use the following URI (ipp:// should also work here)
http://<IP address>:631/ipp/lp1
- Another option: A quick check of the openprinting website shows that the printer is capable of supporting driverless printing
Driverless Printers - OpenPrinting
Kyocera ECOSYS P5021cdn AirPrint™ Kyocera ECOSYS P5021cdw AirPrint™
You may need to ensure mdns is allowed if you have an active firewall (or temporarily disable it for discovery purposes). These commands may help find such a device on the network…
sudo /usr/sbin/lpinfo -v
driverless
Such printers can be explicitly configured with something like…
sudo lpadmin -p <printer_name> -E -v ipp://<printer_IP>/ipp -m everywhere

Printer drivers are deprecated and will stop working in a future version of CUPS. See Remove print filters and printer driver support · Issue #4 · OpenPrinting/cups-sharing · GitHub
Not sure if this is the cause of my problem. If so, I find it very worrying that opensuse does not seem to have a solution.
susepaste is a really cool tool… I didn’t know it yet
You will find the output of cups error log in debug mode for one print job here:
https://susepaste.org/20458532
Hope this will show the really error.
I still need some time for your second post, sorry…

Yes, I did find message that embedded in the error_log you posted (not a comment directly from you), but that is not relevant to your issue though.

All good. We’re all volunteers here and have other life priorities to contend with.
I did note the following, whereby the job is being processed as ‘gray’…

Is the gray printing only originating from specific application(s)?
Try printing via lp command. For example, print a color pdf or jpeg file…
lp -d kyocera -o ColorModel=CMYK /path/to/file.pdf
Does it print as expected?
Hi deano_ferrari,
you made my day!
After using the Arch .PPD file I’m able to print in color mode.
And yes, the command:
lp -d kyocera -o ColorModel=CMYK /path/to/file.pdf
prints the file as expected in color. :good::good:
Many, many thanks to you!
Best regards, bastler0815
Good to read of your success here after using the replacement .ppd file.
Hello,
I’m quite new in Opensuse linux.
Just purchase a Kyocera P6235cdn and facing same “Monochrome” printing issue.
“lp -d kyocera -o ColorModel=CMYK /path/to/file.pdf” is printing in color…but from other applications, it prints in B&W
I try to search for PPD on Arch Linux, as adviced, but no driver for this printer model.
I install Kyocera 9.2 universal Driver, with no success.
Vincent
It might help you.
I think when you go to the site it will detect that you are using Linux.
You might find your printer’s driver ppd file.
Hello,
recently I have faced the same problem. The network printer Kyocera P6230cdn after the system upgrade started to print only monochrome from my PC. Direct printing with “lp -o ColorModel=CMYK …” worked well, but all other applications printed only B/W. In my case, it was not a problem with the wrong driver. For some reason nowadays CUPS installs this printer as “monochrome”, even if in the .ppd file the “color” by default. So I tried first as a superuser the command:
lpadmin -p -o print-color-mode-default=color
And immediately after that edited the file /etc/cups/printers.conf replacing there the option “monochrome” with “color” for my printer. I don’t know, which one of my actions solved the problem, I suppose the second one. Anyway, in my case, it worked and now I can print color from any application.
Anton.
