Tumbleweed 4.9.0.2 boot issue no video after grub menu ==> how to recover 4.8.14 kernel

This weekend I installed maintenance and the kernel was updated i suspect. When the Grub menu comes up and select Opensuse, as soon as the logon menu comes up it displays for a second or two then the video disappears before i can enter my password. I only have the 4.9.0.1 and 4.9.0.2 kernels available in Grub2. I have dual boot enabled with Windows 10 and Tumbleweed. I can boot into windows just fine so the problem appears after I choose Tumbleweed.

My hardware is Intel I5-3570k and AMD HD6850 video card.

I’m a bit of a novice when it comes to linux. Any assistance as to how to recover would be appreciated. I would prefer to attempt a recovery by possibly installing the 4.8.14 kernel if that is possible. Is there an option to start Opensuse in a terminal / safe mode from the grub menu ?

       thanks

Try with editing kernel command line (press ‘e’ in grub menu and edit line starting with “linux” or “linuxef”) and remove “quiet” and add “plymouth.enable=0” on this line. This should give you verbose output without splash screen. It may give some hints as to what happens.
