Trying to open kdenlive in OpenSUSE and getting an error

I am trying to open up kdenlive on an OpenSUSE system however I receive an error from the Terminal.Failed to initialize SDL: Could not setup connection to PulseAudio

When I try to open up kdenlive outside the Terminal I get the following:“Could not create the video preview window, something wrong with your install or driver settings”.

I try to drag and drop an image into the environment but it crashes and closes.
The solutions online that I have seen are specific to Ubuntu and I can’t seem to find a solution to an OpenSUSE issue.

Here is a screen shot of the error after running sudo snap install kdenlive --candidate and then trying to open it.

Its in Spanish but it is saying the same message as above with the addition.Algo falló en la instalación de Kdenlive o en las preferencias del controlador. Por favor. solucionarlo.

Have you recently done a kernel update and not rebooted since trying this? Is this LEAP-15.2 a recent install ? or has it been on your PC for a while. Its possible you have a bad pulse audio config from an older openSUSE version that is causing the issue, and the older config files need to be deleted. Its also possible you have older kdenlive config files from an old openSUSE install, that you also need to remove for this to work for you.

I have had audio problems in the past. I have no option to adjust the volume in the right corner on my KDE. I actually have to adjust the volume in the Terminal amixer sset 'Master' 100.

Where can I delete the config files?

I have tried deleting kdenlive (not the config files however)

According to Kdenlive/Configuration - KDE Community Wiki :

  • ~/.config/kdenliverc : contains the general settings of the application

  • ~/.config/kdenlive-layoutsrc : contains the layout settings

  • ~/.config/session/kdenlive_104534dcfdb61d887154xxxxxxxxxxx_154yyyyyy_98zzzz : temporary session info

  • ~/.cache/kdenlive : contains the cached files. If you can’t load previous Kdenlive project delete the content.

  • ~/.local/share/kdenlive

  • ~/.local/share/stalefiles/kdenlive

  • ~/.local/share/kxmlgui5/kdenlive/kdenliveui.rc : contains UI configuration

  • ~/.local/share/kdenlive/.backup : automatic created backups

Its possible all of those don’t exist on your PC. The ones that start with " ~/.config" for kdenlive are not on my PC

You may try to simply rename one at a time as opposed to delete - and then test in each case - to see which on (if any) is causing the issue. By renaming, you can put back again if/as needed - in the unlikely chance it makes things worse.

I renamed all of the files and folders you suggested, uninstalled kdenlive using snap and then reinstalled it. I still get the same error in the kdenlive environment but the Terminal error is different.

Could it be related to this issue, which also appeared in Tumbleweed? https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=265&t=172343

The possible reason for this error is that the openSUSE distribution (or the packager ?? ) set SDL_AUDIODRIVER=“pulse”, but the latest SDL2 doesn’t recognize “pulse” anymore (it should be “pulseaudio” instead).

That KDE article references a Tumbleweed bug report: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1189778

I find it a bit surprising this also appears on openSUSE-LEAP-15.2 - so this could also be something else? Whose packaged version of kdenlive are you using? What version?

I originally isntalled kdenlive through snap but now I removed/purged it and installed it the AppImage and get the same problems. I change the SDL_AUDIODRIVER=“pulseaudio” but get the same error.

When I open up pulseaudio in the KDE I just get the message “Establishing connection to PulseAudio. PLease wait...” and it does not ever connect to it.

Could it be that my pulseaudio is corrupt?

Out of curiousity, why did you not simply install with YaST or with zypper from the openSUSE site: openSUSE Software

I am suspicious the issue is because of the method you used to install. I am using kdenlive almost daily, with openSUSE-LEAP-15.2 and I have absolutely no issues. This suggests to me the issue is possibly with a different systemic approach that you use for installing applications.

Possibly but I am more suspicious of the packaged version and the method you use to install.

To be honest, I am somewhat new to OpenSUSE and Linux based systems. So probably due to ignorance I am installing and editing my computer incorrectly.

I installed kdenlive using zypper and I get the same error when I open the App (this time it doesn’t crash/close immediately, it closes when I try to drag an image/video into the project folder)

Maybe try again now to clear the kdenlive configuration files.

Also, have you installed the Packman packager multimedia applications for openSUSE ? (that will provide various codecs such that kdenlive can handle different proprietary codecs).
