Trying to avoid zypper chaos - what do we do next?

Hello:

I am running on a Leap 16.0 system.

For my 16 software repositories, %zypper lr shows:

When I run:

   %sudo zypper update

The response comes back:

I attempt to remove these 7 packages and then use zypper to reinstall so as to remove this list

For the first package: libavcodec61

I get the following response upon trying to remove libavcodec61:

I obviously chose NO, don’t delete 237 packages including the desktop and windows manager, (sddm) which will totally cripple Leap 16.0 graphics mode.

So how can we safely move forward here if the gui components to Plasma 6 desktop get scrubbed? Do we come up in a CLI environment and try to do this?

We can use the list of scrubbed packages to create the list of packages to re-install and try to run this for all 7 packages listed above. Maybe that might work?

How can we avoid this potentially risky operation so as to remove the 7 files listed above and avoid reinstalling hundreds or low thousands of packages?

My goal is to clean up this “zypper up” command.

I could carefully store a predetermined list of pkgs that will be clobbered for each step, so we could do the reinstall. However this assumes that we won’t have interplay and side effects from each cycle and further compound the chaos. I am very concerned about this.

Any ideas on how to move forward safely?

That’s a fairly normal message. There’s nothing to be concerned about.

The message is just telling you that there are alternatives for these packages with higher version numbers, but they are in a different repo with a different vendor-id, so they won’t be installed (due to vendor-stickiness). That’s usually a good and correct decision by “zypper”. The message is merely informing you of this decision.

It might have helped to give a link to the bug report.

Yes, for me, “myrlyn” does show 7 available updates. But “zypper” says they are not really available, and there is nothing to do.

Now that the bug report mentions it, yes the Discover Notifier did tell me that there were updates, but “zypper lu” did not find any to apply.

I rebooted for entirely unrelated reasons, and since that reboot I have not seen anything from Discover Notifier.

If you hit the “Package Update” or the “Dist Upgrade” button, those will probably show a sad face emoji, indicating that they cannot be cleanly applied. Trying to set their status to “Update” will show you a dependency conflict with details.

Myrlyn’s “Update” tab shows all packages that have a newer version available. At that point, it doesn’t know yet if they can all be updated without any dependency problem; that is what those two buttons “Package Update” or “Dist-Upgrade” do. That’s what the text next to the buttons explain to avoid confusion.
