Troubleshooting keyboard

OpenSUSE disables some function keys on my notebook (HP Compaq NC6000). For example, I can’t control LCD brightness, can’t switch to the external display…

Strange is that all keys (including the function keys) are functioning properly before the login screen. Once I’m logged in, the function keys do not respond any more.
How can I prevent openSUSE from loading the wrong keymap?

By the way, when using Gparted Live CD function keys are working fine as well. Although this Live CD is based on Debian, is there some setting/script that I could borrow for openSUSE?

  • blnl,

either the X server or your GUI has a wrong setting. Start with sax2, then try the config tool of your KDE, Gnome, whatever you are using.

Could you be a bit more verbose with the instructions?
What do you mean by “Start with sax2”?

Sorry, I’m relatively new to Linux.

Thanks!

follow YaST > Hardware > Keyboard Layout

which will start the SaX2 keyboard module and throw up a dialog
showing which keyboard type it ‘thinks’ is being used (you can spin to
another, maybe “HP Compaq NC6000” is listed, i do not know) as well as
the selected layout…

and, there is an options tab where you can go crazy with clicks…
-=have fun=- [but, keep a record of what you change (so you can ‘back
out’) to “it works–just not at 100%”]

as for LCD brightness, i’ve seen that before here in the fora, the
open source driver for that may or may not work for you…but, a
thorough fora search <http://forums.opensuse.org/search.php> should
turn up several things to try…which should pop up in the more
focused, laptop forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/laptop/

Have a lot of fun…

I already tried YaST > Hardware > Keyboard Layout. There is no keyboard layout for NC6000 (another HP computer is selected).

By the way, the brightness control is loaded from BIOS. It doesn’t require any keymap. Brightness control works even under the good old MS-DOS (without any keyboard drivers).
So what happens with openSUSE, another keymap is loaded which assigns wrong functions to the brightness control keys.

I would like to prevent openSUSE from loading any keymap.
How to do that?

Thanks for the links.
I tried programing the keycodes before (setkeycodes, Xmodmap), but without success.
Also according to the second source, no keycodes exist for brightness control.

Recently, I tried out Fedora 11 on my notebook. All the functions keys are functioning properly.

What has Fedora that openSUSE does not have?

I still have tar.gz of the Fedora system.
Can I take something from there and place it in openSUSE to make the function keys working?
