Troubleshooting An Unrecoverable System Freeze Crash?

Hi,

Been using openSUSE Tumbleweed KDE 64Bit for a few days.
I woke up today and my O.S. was frozen and required a hard reset?
How would I troubleshoot this freeze?
Let me know, thanks!

On all systemd systems, all the system’s logs are aggregated in “the journal.”

Although one could read the MAN pages for journalctl, I recommend the digitalocean article

https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-journalctl-to-view-and-manipulate-systemd-logs

I’d recommend a combination of the following commands

  • Invoke a previous boot (the session that crashed)
  • the last entries, however many entries you wish, similar to tail

I haven’t checked the following command, but should work to display the last 100 entries of the previous bootlog

journalctl -b -1 -n 100

There are other ways you can extract entries by specifying error levels, specific processes, systemd services, etc as described in the article.

Hi,

There is a problem using: “journalctl -b -1 -n 100” in konsole:
it truncates the information on the right?

I am using KDE, but I don’t see a log viewer app in Start menu?
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Jesse

Try with the konsole window maximized first.

Or better, switch to a virtual terminal (ctrl-alt-f2), login, and execute the command from there.

Ok, will do for next freeze crash.
(system was ok before I started using VPN in openVPN)

Jesse

Hi,

Came home to a frozen desktop again.
I hard reset and booted into the OS and ran the suggested command in Konsole.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Jesse

Hi,

Just did a DuckDuckGo search and found this:
https://github.com/kotelnik/plasma-applet-thermal-monitor/issues/41

Is there something wrong with plasma-applet-thermal-monitor?
Let me know, this is a mission-critical system so I need it to not freeze crash…

Jesse

The KDE widget is below:
https://store.kde.org/p/998915

That widget hasn’t been updated for a while…

There is reference to the error message you’re seeing here: System (journalctl) log is filled with repeated messages · Issue #41 · kotelnik/plasma-applet-thermal-monitor · GitHub

… but I don’t know if fixing that will cure your freeze, could just be coincidental. It may be worth looking further back in the journal for any other errors…

Hi,

I disabled the temperature KDE Plasma widget.
If it freeze crashes again, I will post new Konsole output.
Hopefully we can fix this, thanks!

Jesse

Ok, woke up to a frozen desktop.
I previously disabled the CPU temperature widget.
Here is the output in Konsole:

Hi,

Woke up today with the OS still working…

I think disabling swap file had something to do with the freeze crashing of OS.
I’ll see how the next few days go with swap file enabled…

Thanks!

Jesse

Re-enabling swap is a good try.
The only anomaly I see in your posted system log snippet only mentions your network connections disconnecting, which could be due to a number of possibilities, possibly earlier (may need to modify your journalctl filter for other events like different types of errors… Or, maybe return a larger number of entries trying to find anything prior)

Could be your system is scheduled to do some overnight maintenance butting an unusual load on your system, and could benefit from some swap…

All speculation,
TSU

Hi,

Woke up today and system freeze crashed again…
From what I could see on the screen it seems the memory and swap both ran out of space?
Any ideas on how to troubleshoot the above?(possible memory leak)
Thanks!

Jesse

Any chance you had a Firefox window open? I’m seeing freezes on occasion and they all seem to happen with Firefox being open and high CPU usage.Last time Firefox running a screen locker started on unlocking screen/mouse/keyboard froze.

Yes, running Firefox…

Woke up today to a frozen system again.
There is a memory leak with something.

How would I learn which application has memory leak?
Thanks!

Jesse

Top or KsysGuard shows memory use

I truly suspect FF as the problem here. Don’t leave it running any more then you need it.

I’ve turned off screen locker for the moment, though I’ve had it lock with Vbox and FF running also.

In FF I have noScript running and notice much higher CPU usage with it on rather then off. .

Hi,

I’ll keep “KSysGuard” open overnight to see where the memory leak is.
I’ve never had a problem with Firefox on any Linux but we will see…

Jesse

Remember also you can inspect previous system logs as far back as you want until they might purged by simply specifying the boot number. Even if logs are rotated, you can invoke that bootlog without doing anything special.
