trouble with wrong date format

Perhaps im in the complete wrong forum…

Yesterday i installed the new openSuse with kde 4.4.4. Now i have the problem that the date is shown in the wrong format. Here in germany the date format is 16.07.2010 but in dolphin and many other applications its displayed in the form 2010-07-16.
Via Systemsettings - Land/Region/Language i get access to the date format, and its correct there, but then in the applications its displayed wrong again. Even if i go to Yast and configure that time is synchronized wiht a ntp server it shows me the wrong format.
I already tried some in /etc/sysconfig/language and entered the correct format, but after a restart all menues are shown in english and not in germany anymore.
Can anyone pls help ?

Thanks,
migo

I can tell you that it has noting to do with ntp for one thing. Ntp synchronisation has nothing to do with date and time formats. So you don’t need to look in that direction.

yes, ken_yap, i believe you  I wanted to demonstrate with this, that even Yast doesnt recognize the correct date format that is adjusted in the systemsettings. But the question is still: where can i adjust the date format so the whole kde uses the same and correct one ?

You do not tell if you loged out and in again after the changes. All programs allready running still have the “old” environment variables and thus show the “old” format.
IIRC I always have to change to locality settings in two steps. The first one to change to the correct language and then at least restart KDE “system settings” which will then show the items (including date/time formats ) in the correct language. E.g. in my case, when changing to dutch and in the same session (other tab) changing to YYY-MM-DD went wrong. Ending System settings and starting them anew now showed me JJJJ-MM-DD as possibility. (As you see I like the most significant number first, like ISO)

This could or could not be of any help.

Hello

Yes i re-logged after i changed the settings in /etc/sysconfig/language. Now i did what you told me, changed the date format to a wrong one, relog and changed to the right one and relogged again. After all the date format in Dolphin is correct now 18.07.2010, but in Yast (espacially seen at the ntp configuration) its still shown wrong, also in kmymoeny. Anyways, thanks for your help hcvv. There is still so much more to fix so the date format is the smallest of all problems !

my openSUSE with KDE is not so advanced as yours, so it may be that
‘progress’ has removed your ability to do what i can do:

that is, you say you looked in YaST and all looked well, but things
are still wrong in KDE, and i think that is because while the system
is set correctly, KDE has it own settings–on my machine to access
those and make them do what you want is to follow this path:

open Personal Settings - Configure Desktop and click to “Region &
Accessibility” then to “Country/Region & Language” then click on the
“Time & Dates” (tab) and have a ball…

BUT first, i’d suggest you back up and check if KDE even knows where
you are: click on the “Locale” tab and see if your correct location is
selected (i guess if you get that right all the rest will fall into
place, automatically)…

now, it has been my experience that sometimes when the right setting
is indicated, the way to get it fixed is to just switch the wrong
locale and click accept/apply…log out of KDE and then back
in…THEN set it to the correct locale, click accept/apply and all
will live happily ever after, maybe…it should be free to try (and
probably safe).

good luck, let us know if any of that helps…or not.
