Trouble with video in openSUSE 12.2

I built a new computer with a Gigabyte F2A85x-UP4 motherboard, and AMD A5800K processor with an integrated GPU (no separate video card) and installed opensuse12.2 to dual boot with Windows 8. All of this is using UEFI with multiple 3 terrabyte drives.

Windows 8 boots and functions perfectly, so I believe my hardware to be fine. With openSUSE 12.2, I’m having all sorts of video problems. When I installed the proprietary AMD Calalyst 12.10 video driver, the login page and Gnome3 flickered to the point where I had to go back to the default driver.

With the default driver, in Gnome3, .avi files play choppy at what seems like a low frame rate. When I play .mkv files with VLC, they play fine for a while, then the video freezes (audio keeps going) and I have to hit reset to restart. In IceWM, the video seemed to play fine. In KDE, the video also played fine. However, in KDE, after about an hour of use, while I was browsing in Firefox, the screen went dark, came back on, then went dark again and stayed dark. Again, I had to hit reset. Sometimes, also, when I boot up, the loging splash screen will only half show. Then the screen will go dark and stay dark before the login prompt. After repeated attempts at reset, I can finally login.

Does anybody have experience with this? Seems like a lot of video issues with hardware that’s stable in Windows 8. Can anyone offer help? I’m fairly inexperienced with Linux. Please_try_again got me as far as I am now, but I’m still having issues.

Thanks.

Does this suggest I have to specify my dual Acer P241W monitors? How do I do that?

Under “Display” in “hardware configuration” accessed from Yast, my Acer P241W monitors are listed. Let me know if you needmore of the Xorg.0.log file.

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-monitor.conf:

# Having multiple "Monitor" sections is known to be problematic. Make

If you copy the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log contents to the openSUSE paste bin site SUSE Paste and then after creating the link copy here the link where that is located. If susepaste is down, there try another paste bin site such as Pastebin.com - #1 paste tool since 2002! .

By using a paste bin site, you will not run up against the same maximum character limitation when showing the diagnostic log information.

Not only that, but you diminish traffic for those people with limited
internet connectivity.
