Trouble with updating and printer

Hello,

I installed Opensuse 11.3 today and my first impression is better then Mint 9. I have an Epson SX405. Im able to scan but when I try to print a document in Open Office I can’t select the printer…What do I have to do to make it work? Also I would like to know how to check if there are updates. In Mint there was an update app in the menu. Where is it here? (I don’t mean the one on the bottom of the screen but one where I could search)

Thanks

On your update question, open YaST Control Center and chose Online update, You may also want to add the Packman Repository, In the Configure Software Repositories. section

Two different problems, should be two different threads.

For the printer:
Make sure you are in the group “lp”
Add yourself by:

  1. open a terminal
  2. type su and enter root password when requested
  3. at the root prompt, type lppasswd -a robertjan88
  4. it will ask you for a password. Make one up or you can use your user password if you feel safe about that.
Try using the printer. Not sure if this requires a reboot or logout.

For the updates:

  1. open yast (found on the menu after clicking the opensuse icon in lower left) and enter root password
  2. in the box that opens: click on software in the left pane and then software management in the right pane
  3. a new box will open: click on package groups
  4. at the bottom of the left pane, select “all packages” In the right pane, packages with newer versions will have the version numbers in blue.
You can inspect these packages and click the icon next to ones you want to update. I always accept all to be updated. Click on “accept” and the packages will be updated.

While you’re in yast, you might as well check the printer settings under hardware->printers.

The printer worked. I uninstalled KDE and installed Gnome. Looks super and could install printer without a problem.

How is the update programm in Gnome calling?

You do not need to uninstall KDE to install Gnome, The Gnome version of YaST is not as good as the KDE version,(you can’t do as much with it) install the KDE version.

I would rather say that the gtk version of the yast package manager or yast online update are very
different than the ones for the qt version. Whether worse or better, that depends on each user
(typically in gnome you get fewer choices in most programs). However, the other yast modules are the
same on both versions, only looks change.

Me, I also prefer the qt package manager, more info. I know of a trick or two to change just that
two modules.

However, the gtk version in 11.3 has a new feature that the qt one doesn’t have: undo. You can undo
install of a package with all the libraries that were installed with it and that are no longer needed.

Isn’t that cute? >:-)

No matter whether you use gnome or kde, you use Yast for all your admin tasks.
You will get the software updates by setting them up in yast2>software.

K you lost me now. What are all those terms YAST etc? And why isn’t Gnome good? Looks very nice (better then KDE I would say) and my printer works with it like a charm…

If you like it ,stick with it. As mentioned it cones down to personal choice.

If you click the ‘Computer’ icon on the bottom left of your desktop, you will find an entry for yast.
Yast is suse’s admin tool for most things.

To invoke yast from a terminal, you run yast2 as root. (Try it: open a terminal and type su and enter, then and password and the yast2)

And why isn’t Gnome good? Looks very nice (better then KDE I would say) and my printer works with it like a charm…

Gnome is a very good desktop and one that many prefer over KDE.

YaST has been explained, the gtk version is the version that is used by Gnome by default, with KDE it is the qt version, either version can be used with either desktop.

I am not a Gnome user, but I thought it was time to install it again and have another look,
and at gtk YaST. I think the gtk YaST should do what you want easily.

yast (YaST) is the administration program in SUSE, and it comes in several flavours: kde, gnome,
text, and web (beta).

You should know this already.
