Trouble Installing Open Office 3.3

I have just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 on my Gateway EC14 series netbook. I have it dual-booting with Windows 7. I downloaded Open Office 3.3, unzipped the .jar into a folder on my desktop and then ran the setup. It went through the install and then it failed. The log had a bunch of error messages like this one:

Some of the packages were successful, but as far as I can tell the only ones that installed were plugins and such–I don’t think any of the OpenOffice applications actually installed.

I spent the last twenty or thirty minutes trying to find any simple solution to this so as not to waste your time, but I coulnd’t find anything that fixed it. I did look at adding repositories and checked to make sure I downloaded the right version of OpenOffice, but I have all of the default official repositories and I have the right install as well.

Out of curiosity, why not just use LibreOffice?

(You might have to get rid of it before you can get OO, I think)

Because I like OpenOffice. Are they basically the same?

I intentionally didn’t pick LibreOffice as a package when I was installing so that I could get OpenOffice. That shouldn’t be my problem–or so it seems to me.

So I take it you’re trying to install OOo in your home directory? This may or may not be possible.The archive you’ve downloaded is a bundle of RPM packages to be run in sequence. From your output, the installation of the core package has failed. Try running the setup as root with the defaults, or better, follow kozzington’s advice and grab LibreOffice from the repos.

Why don’t you use your bin directory? That’s what it’s there for.

Really, why do you want to do it this way? Are you running out of space on your / partition? Getting it to work in /home will be a lot more trouble. You’ll have to create some directories, tinker with the environment variables and possibly edit the setup script. I wouldn’t recommend this. If it has to be OO, create a local repository and extract the RPMs there. You can then do the installation in YaST or zypper.

I logged in as root and the install ran fine. If I had read the little note in parentheses at the bottom of the install window I would have noticed that I needed to log in as root to do the install. It is now installed in a subfolder of /opt. Is that an acceptable place to install stuff?

When Oracle bought Sun many OSS projects fostered by Sun went in a different direction. You can read about it on many news sites, or check some of the threads about it here.

it sounds like you did what you have done in Win7, that is log out of
the desktop as yourself, and log back in as ‘administrator’ which we
call ‘root’…

that is not the correct way to exercise root powers…you should never
log into KDE/Gnome/XFCE or any other *nix-like graphical user interface
desktop environment as root…

doing so 1) opens you up to several different security problems if you
(for example) browse the net, 2) too many too easy ways to damage your
system no matter how careful your actions (for example: well documented
cases of unintended change of ownership of ~/.ICEauthority and
~/.Xauthority from user to root sometimes occurs), 3) and, anyway
logging into KDE/etc as root is never required to do any and all
administrative duties…

so, always log in as yourself, and “become root” by using a root powered
application (like YaST, File Manager Superuser Mode) or using “su -”,
sudo, kdesu, or gnomesu in a terminal to launch whatever tool is needed
(like Kwrite to edit a config file, or just run a .jar file)…read more

additionally: after logging into KDE/Gnome/etc as root, if you
experience problems (for example, with uncommanded file ownership and
permissions changes) and if you can provide us with details of what you
were doing while you were logged in as root, that would help us identify
if there’s a bug that needs to be fixed…thanks for your help…

yep…there are a lot of things about Linux which different…some of
the procedures you used in Window you can use here…some are not so
good…some flat won’t work…others will break your system…
