I’m having trouble installing drivers for my ati radeon 6870. I downloaded the latest drivers from ati.com (amd, whatever) and I tried to install them. First thing it asks is wether to install Driver 8.92 on X.Org 6.9 or later 64 -bit; or to generate a distribution specific driver package. the first one installs catalyst control center, but the driver is clearly not working (and is giving me a headache, It takes 4 seconds for this firefox window to redraw when I move it). I also tried the second option, but when I try to install the subsequently created package, I get an error saying
patch is needed by fglrx64_xpic_SUSE121-8.920-1.x86_64
can anyone tell me what I’m doing wrong?
Since nobody answered until now, there are some openSUSE specific infos
available here
http://en.opensuse.org//SDB:ATI_drivers
it seems to be important what is mentioned in the preamble the wiki page
also contains references to 1-click installers, maybe the easiest
solution for you.
The 6870 is listed as supported by the proprietary driver so I guess you
will have luck with it.

Ok, I guess that worked, sortof. I used the 1-click 64 bit version.
at least my opengl version is upgraded to what I need to do these assignments, which is great. however it’s not performing the way it should.
when I do things like move a window around or scroll through a page there is a very noticable delay and youtube videos at 720p stutter as well (though it’s not as bad as it was when I tried the drivers I got from the ati site). I can’t use my 2 monitors as a single desktop (when I do it through system settings it says " required virtual size does not fit available size: requested=(3840, 1080), minimum= (320,200), maximum= (1920, 1920)" and when I try it through CCC it just closes CCC when I click apply (which is quite bizarre imo, it should never close when I click apply, that’s what OK is for) and doesn’t change anything (same with ok))
is there anything i should be doing to get it to work properly?

I hope that right now an ati expert jumps in who knows more than me
about their graphics cards and trouble shooting them (my last ati was
more than 5 years ago).

Yeah I hope so too, you’ve been a really big help so far though, thanks
