First and introduction. I am completely new to linux/unix environment. I am trying to install openSuse on my laptop an Alienware Area-51 m9750. I have it on a separate hard drive from my windows boot.
I would like to go into the desktop but no luck =( about 20 percent through loading on the lizard screen the mouse appears and it hangs at 20 percent. I waited for 10 minutes and had to reboot.
Now when i boot into the Failsafe everything works good. So my question is how do i fix my problem and be able to use the Desktop version.
Can you go to failsafe mode and open Konsole once you have logged in. To open Konsole simply Press Alt+F2 and type “konsole” (without the quotation marks). Once you are in Konsole type this in and press [ENTER]
/sbin/lspci -nnk
Then select all of that output and copy it (right click and click copy) and post it here (paste it here) in code tags like this guide explains: Posting in Code Tags - A Guide

So, if this laptop has an nVIDIA video chipset, first and foremost you need to add the kernel load option nomodeset. You can try this by typing in only nomodeset on the options line BEFORE you select the STANDARD openSUSE kernel startup and see if you get it to work. If so, you need to consider adding in this option to your grub /boot/grub/menu.lst file as root user for use all of the time. You will want to read the following document:
You should consider downloading the latest version of the nVIDIA driver (260.19.29 I think) from nvidiia.com and installing it the hard way. I even have a script file to help here:
