TravelMate B115M freezes on many Linux distributions and Tumbleweed, doesn't freeze on Leap 42.1

Hi, I own a Acer TravelMate B115-M-41RQ which is equipped with a Pentium N3540. I’ve had many hardware issues with this device. When I first got it, it would randomly freeze at any time when running Fedora or Ubuntu-based distributions and when I attempted to perform a standard shutdown, the OS would stop running but didn’t turn off parts of the device like LED light. When trying openSUSE for the first time in spring 2015, I discovered that Tumbleweed was the only distribution capable of running my laptop flawlessly. This fact actually turned me into a full-time openSUSE user, which I still am. At some point in late 2015 the freezing started hunting me again.

Something in the hardware or software stack freezes. It just keeps displaying what was last on the screen, but I can’t manipulate anything. No reaction to keyboard, mouse or touchpad interaction. Pressing Ctrl-Alt-F{1-7} doesn’t do anything. I can only press the power button until the device is turned off and boot it up again. I never found a way to trigger this behavior on purpose.

openSUSE Leap 42.1 doesn’t have this problem. Please guide me to fix this issue in Tumbleweed.

You can try to see if there is anything in the system logs, the following is an example that takes a long time to output because the entire previous session has to be extracted before the last lines can be filtered and displayed

journalctl --boot -l | tail -n 100

If you know the exact or very close approximate time of your freeze, you can more quickly query logs, for example since an hour ago

journalctl --since "1 hour ago"

You can find more ways to return system log entries between times in various journalctl blogs and MAN pages

TSU

Yo I finally managed to get some samples of the system log after a freeze.

Try enabling “SysRq” in the Kernel options (YaST) – “SysRq” is usually “[Alt]+[Prnt]”. From a VT (for example tty1):
[ul]
[li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[r]": regain control of the keyboard and mouse. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[h]": display some help. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[t]": dump the active tasks to the console. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[p]": dump the current register contents and flags to the console. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[m]": dump the memory to the console. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[s]": force a write of the data in the disk-cache to the disk. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[e]": send SIGTERM to the kernel – should kill all processes except init. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[u]": unmount all mounted File Systems. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[b]": immediate reboot. [/li][li]"[Alt]+[SysRq]+[o]": shut-down and possibly power off. [/li][/ul]
It is unlikely that, you’ll be able to actually login to the system, but you may possibly be able to glean some remaining information about the shutdown state which has not been written to the systemd journal.

There is a bug problem with Chromium causing freezing.
Check the Yast Network and Firewall and check wlan0 card.

Next update should address this problem.
