I have Suse 12.1 and there is no icon for the trash can on the Desktop. I have tried to drag it
there but it won’t let me. How do I get it there? Whenever I want to empty it, it’s a pain
finding it first.

welcome new poster!
there are several desktops available for openSUSE 12.1, which one are
you using?
(the correct answer depends on which it is)
is using KDE you might find your answer in
http://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/html/openSUSE/opensuse-startup/art.kdequick.html
if it is Gnome, try
http://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/html/openSUSE/opensuse-startup/art.gnomequick.html
in any case the answer probably exists already in

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say you’re running kde…my kde desktop also doesn’t have a trash icon.
I come from a pretty minimalist windowing environment background, so my quick fix for this would be something like:
- copy an existing .desktop file present in your ~/Desktop directory to a new name, like Trash.desktop
- open ~/Desktop/Trash.desktop in your editor of choice
- change the following fields:
Name=Trash
URL=trash:/
Icon=SOME_ICON_OF_YOUR_CHOOSING - save
- check your desktop
I suspect a similar work flow would succeed for gnome as well.
Hope that helps.
hmmmm . . . for KDE this seems a bit of overkill.
simply right click on your desktop > unlock widgets (if not already) > add widget > next to where it says categories type ‘trash’ > double click the trash can icon and it will appear on your desktop free to be dragged anywhere or resized.
If you prefer you could add it to your taskbar instead.
Ahh widgets. I think I tried looking through the sea of widgets that come with kde and didn’t see this one. Good to know for next time!
