Transferring Evolution

I am transferring all my files from one computer running Mandriva to a new one running OpenSuse. I have been using Evolution and need to transfer all the settings, contacts and emails over so I can carry on working from the new machine.

Any advice on how to accomplish this?

Mike

There is an option to backup your settings in evolution (and then restore them on the new machine).

File → Backup Settings

File → Restore Settings.

HTH…

Thanks for that. I have now tried it but there are problems. Any further advice would be welcome.

I restored to the new machine from the zipped backup file. Now I have three problems:

  1. All the addressbooks are visible in ‘Contacts’ but cannot be opened. The program is looking in /home/mike/.local/share/evolution/addressbooks/ but cannot find the file or the permissions are incorrect. On the old machine these files were in /home/mike/.evolution/addressbooks/. I have tried copying them to the new location but still nothing. The detailed error message says
    “GDbus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown:
The name org.gnome.evolution.dataserver.AddressBook was not provided by any .service files”

  2. None of the old emails have been copied over.

  3. All the accounts in ‘Preferences’ have been copied but information is missing. If I open ‘Preferences’ and try to edit an account the ‘Receiving Email’ and ‘Sending Email’ tabs are blank - just says ServerType: None with no options in the dropdown and no more boxes or buttons.

Hope someone can help

Mike

I have tried to uninstall and reinstall Evolution to see if this would sort this out. Hoping that running a new install with the restore option might work.

However. after I deleted Evolution and deleted all $HOME/.evolution and $HOME.local/share/evolution for good measure, I reinstalled Evolution and on opening it came up with all the contacts, accounts, etc as before. So there must be files stored somewhere else. Same problems continue.

Another update.

I deleted Evolution and folders .local/share/evolution, .config/evolution, .cache/evolution & .gconf/apps/evolution. Reinstalled and it ran the first install wizard, selected restore from file, selected file. It then ran the restore. Tried to open and had exactly the same problems as before.

Just for the record the old version is 2.28.2 and the new version is 2.32.1.
