I have been trying to get my head around what I imagine is a very basic thing to do. I have a bunch of pictures on my Windows laptop that I wish to transfer to my Tumbleweed desktop (so different systems) over the power of the internet, but I cannot understand how to do it.
I am running KDE Plasma so if anyone could give me the most basic beginners step-by-step, please hold my hand, kind of guide I would be indebted to you!
My preference is please keep any advice to GUI, I avoid the terminal as much as I can (hate away it’s fair). I have spent the last 2 hours looking into guides for Filezilla and trying to get there through my Network folder on KDE but I got nothing. All the guides for Filezilla say “connect to your SSH server” without telling me how I set one up and I try and search how to set it up and I just don’t understand because it is all terminal commands.
The easiest and fastest way (and reliable) is to use a USB stick (Flash Drive known by some). Seriously. You can get a two-pack of 64gb sticks from a local retailer for about $15. Then, slide it into a USB port on your Win machine, copy the files. They are available in various sizes, so if 64gb is too much, you can opt for a 32gb … or maybe you need more, so a 128gb stick is in order.
After the files are copied to the stick, un-mount it, and slide it into a USB port on your Linux machine, copy the files down. Done, in about five minutes total.
Your other option is to copy the files across a network between the Win machine and the Linux machine, using SAMBA. But that’s “too much” info to give you a step-by-step in this post.
But you didn’t mention “how much” data (total file size) you are wanting to transfer, which would be helpful
I have to admit I usually prefer pragmatic approaches. So, if you just want “to get this done” use a pen drive. As for the SAMBA approach - which would be more sustainable - please check here:
Thank you everyone for your help. I just learnt about the magic of WinSCP and it is pretty much everything I am looking for so I really appreciate your advice (I tried setting up Samba again, far too complex for my peanut brain) but WinSCP takes the cake
