Ok, the OP has their answer, and it’s clear that TU is not a supported mechanism for openSUSE Leap/Tumbleweed (as per the bug report).

While robust civil discussion is encouraged, this one will not go anywhere in this forum, and the moderator position on this is if it works for you, use it, go blog about it elsewhere, but it is not the recommended/supported update mechanism for openSUSE Leap/Tumbleweed today.

transactional-update runs zypper dist-upgrade and zypper update, the recommended procedures for upgrading Tumbleweed and Leap respectively in a safe manner.

Removing the ‘Transactional Server’ system role from the Yast Installer will not affect its functionality. Deleting or breaking the transactional-update package will not impact systems that have been upgraded with command ‘transactional-update’. Users can switch to other safe upgrading methods, such as using Tumbleweed zypper dist-upgrade as a systemd service.

Hi,
I am joining this thread with some trepidation so please forgive if I feel a bit uncomfortable!

Why I am here is because my TW KDE system on my HP-Z640 has become almost unusable; like “treacle” would be the best description. Common applications I use for work such as Thunderbird and Dolphin are slower to respond than I can now accept and now the desktop screen mouse actions are quite unstable/imprecise and selection delays frequent to the extent that I sometimes try again only to find two windows opening a few seconds later.

By way of background my office machines run Leap 15.5 but I have “retired” and am trying to work more from my own room where I have the HP machine. During an hardware upgrade a while ago I thought I would therefore switch to TW as a learning experience and in anticipation of news of future changes.

I recognise that TW is more ‘cutting edge’ and am not complaining, only seeking a way forward that suits my needs but recently the above problems have prompted me to find out what I should do next.

I came to this thread attracted by the title and having read previously the mention of Transactional updates. Sadly I am not much wiser with names like Transactional updates, Slowroll, MicroOS, Aeon Leap16 (?) et al. all in the mix.

The bottom line is that I must change my OS and probably need a more conservative release. Which one and how I get there are the questions. My only additional comment concerns KDE and what has been referred to as bloat but this is for another time.

If any of the gurus here have any views I would appreciate some guidance.

Slowroll sits somewhere between Leap and Tumbleweed, though leaning more towards TW than Leap.
Perhaps create a new thread for more visibility. :white_check_mark:

Transactional updates are something that’s specifically designed and supported for MicroOS and its desktop variants, Kalpa and Aeon. It can be used in other areas by experienced users, but really isn’t something that I feel should be a key consideration when looking at TW vs. Slowroll vs. Leap, as it’s intended use is really for those MicroOS-based systems.

I agree with @pavinjoseph that you should start a separate discussion with your questions, since the use of transactional updates isn’t really core to the question you’re asking.
