why does this process use 100% cpu. I have googled the process, and can’t really see what it is doing.

It should only run like that for a short time.
However, it has a control panel (search for search) where you can tell it
to use less cpu.

It runs like that for ages (until is randomly stops - long wait) or i kill it… for better or worse
Where is the control panel for it? I have checked the repos, and cant seem to find it. What is the name?

I don’t know the name, and you have it installed.
Gnome, main menu, search box, type “search”. One of the first entries is it.
If you are running KDE, what the heck are you doing running tracker? KDE
has another similar software. There should be a bugzilla for that.
Tracker is a content search engine and database. It has to examine your
files in order to index them. That takes time. It should run initially,
then get out of sight as you work on the computer. If you don’t work, he
works >;-)

Hi,
I’ve got this issue since I upgraded to OpenSuse 12.1, the tracker-miner-fs process takes at least the 33% of the CPU and it spends hours like this.
I use KDE and the search engine by default is called Nepomuk (Virtuoso maintains it’s database).
I have disabled Nepomuk but the tracker-miner-fs is still running in memory… Looking in other threads I’ve found that tracker is the serach engine for Gnome and I had it installed in my system, YAST shows these info about it:
Tracker is a powerful desktop-neutral first class object database, tag/metadata database, search tool and indexer. It consists of a common object database that allows entities to have an almost infinite number of properties, metadata (both embedded/harvested as well as user definable), a comprehensive database of keywords/tags and links to other entities. It provides additional features for file-based objects including context linking and audit trails for a file object. It has the ability to index, store, harvest metadata, retrieve and search all types of files and other first class objects.
If you have the gnome-panel-applet-tracker installed, you can disable it, just write “Tracker” in the box that you’ll find when you click on the Suse button.
