tracker-miner-f consuming 50% resources

I’m running on a 300/400MBs usb stick on an older Dell 1545 laptop. The process gets repeatedly hung and eventually hangs my system. I’ve read somewhere that you can edit tracker preferences; but I haven’t been able to figure out how to do this.

Assuming that you are using Gnome, Tracker setup is in “Search and Indexing” preferences. Maybe what you are seeing is just the initial search, resource usage should diminish once the system has been completely scanned.
Nevertheless, you can also simply “stop” the Miner process in “System Monitor” > Processes tab.
Or even uninstall Tracker completely if you don’t use searching your documents.
