touchpad tap not working

My touchpad is not working properly under opensuse 11.3 rc1. I can move the mouse pointer but tapping doesn’t work. I tried to enable tapping in synaptiks, but so far no luck. I have an acer 5920G laptop. Any suggestions?

If you’re using KDE, have a look into Systemsettings -> Input Devices -> Touchpad. Hope that helps.

Thanks but does not help, tapping is enabled by default.
I have downloaded rc2 and tapping is still not working.

Thanks for any more help

jim

Further to above comment if open gsynaptics tap is not enabled
if enabled it works until you reboot. The you have to enable again.

if gsynaptics work for you, maybe this also works in a terminal:

synclient TapButton1=1 TapButton2=2

if so, you can workaround the issue with creating a new file in ~/.kde4/Autostart and adding these two lines to it:

#!/bin/sh
synclient TapButton1=1 TapButton2=2

after that, make the file executable with

chmod u+x ~/.kde4/Autostart/YOURFILENAME

Good Luck

Well I not sure what went wrong I did reply to but its not here.

So the code worked OK in the terminal,
But the rest does not, with the error no such file or directory.

What do you have in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics.conf?

Is tapping turned on by adding

Option "MaxTapTime" "180"

to the InputClass section?

Hi, The kde autostart does not seem to exist. It comes back as no such file or directory.

Also there is no 20-synaptics.conf? file.

jim

There is also no 20-synaptics.conf file

My thanks to all who have tried to help.
I also have suse 10.2 on my laptop , I can access the files above
without problem.
It would seem to be a bug as the files if there are in the wrong place.

Looking in bugziller no taping is there but against gnome.

Hopefully in will be ok when released.

Other problem …

hi , my touchpad click not work with opensuse 11.3 rc2 64bit

how to fix that .

my laptop is hp pavilion dv7 1285dx

Clicks with touchpad trick … help

Hello,

on an Ideapad S10 tapping didn’t worked too. Found this thread and:

Workaround with .kde4/Autostart/touchpad is working

Changes in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-synaptics seem to be ignored. I added

Option "TapButton1" "1"

but after restarting, the value (listed via synclient -l) is still “0”.

Option "MaxTapTime" "180"

didn’t worked too.

Does anybody reactivated tapping via the 20-synaptics-file ?

Otherwise i’ll open a bugreport.

Regards.

I noticed this with my synaptic touchpad and used System Settings/ Touchpad/ Touchpad configuration / clicked on the Tapping tab and selected the middle “Tapping with one finger” option and set this to “left mouse button”. (I have only used KDE so I have no idea of the Gnome equivalent).

All was well after that. It does seem odd that the default setting is disabled as this is a good feature of the synaptic pad. This would be an easy solution if the above detailed hints have not worked.

One of the reasons that it is disabled by default is that some of us
simply cannot use a touchpad on which tapping is enabled. It is a matter
of body capacitance, or some other feature that cannot be changed. If you
have the condition, considerable damage can be done while you are trying
to do anything. Imagine random mouse clicks while you are typing and/or
mofing the mouse. I had this condition on a Gnome desktop, utterly
destroyed the desktop, and had to reinstall to get it back. Your problems
with tapping disabled are minor by comparison.

Hi
In the Gnome Control Center → Mouse, I can disable the touchpad on this
netbook whilst typing…

Sorry Larry, I just assumed the default was for some other reason than you described. I hope I did not cause offence. I certainly did not mean to.

As you rightly state, amending this setting is very easy.

Hello,

and thanks at clatworthy. Worked with enabling in kde-system-settings. Sometimes the solution is quite too simple

Maybe one could post this hint in the release notes during installation ?

Regards.

what about click on touchpad ?? my desktop kde and i use 11.3 rc2 64bit

Hi,

what do you mean by “click” ?

Regards.

what do you mean by “click” ?

Clicks with touchpad screen not work with me …

please help

Do you mean that using the touchpad button doesn’t work OR that tipping on the touchpad-area has not the same result as using the mousebutton ?
