Touchpad not working in Toshiba Satellite

Hello. I use openSUSE with GNOME. My problem is that I cannot activate the touchpad for using it, nor the touchpad buttons. I’m new to all this (this meaning Linux in general), but I was told to post the following:

The command hwinfo gave me no info whatsoever about the touchpad.

This is the output of dmesg | grep -i touchpad

Any help will be greatly appreciated lads  Thank you.

Hi
Try to install gsynaptics rpm by YaST and configure your touchpad.

I did that but I cannot run Synaptics. I get the following error message:
“You have to set ‘SHMConfig’ ‘true’ in xorg.conf or XF86Config to use GSynaptics”
I’ve checked xorg.conf and SHMConfig is set to true.

Try the live CD of openSUSE 12.1, when it is released on Wednesday.

I have an older (2004 vintage) Toshiba, where the touchpad is fine though less featured than newer touchpads.

I have a newer Dell, where it is hit-or-miss with the touchpad. Sometimes when I boot, it is recognized. Sometimes it isn’t. I have had that problem with opensuse 11.3 and 11.4. However, testing with release candidates for 12.1, the touchpad reliably works.

Your hardware is different, so it might not be the same. That’s why I suggest testing with the live CD. If the touchpad works, then consider upgrading to 12.1 (or installing from that live CD).
