I made the mistake of letting totem play .wmv files. I now want to get rid of all the files in the totem playlist and free up the space. I cannot find any of the files anywhere! I googled the problem and came up with a bunch of ubuntu answers that focused on clearing the file list but not the files. BTW, the suggestions didn’t work to do even that much! No matter what I’ve done to delete the files, totem “finds” them again. Do I have to reformat my HD!!!
Running 12.1 and kde 4.8.
I guess my real mistake was looking for these files since they didn’t really bother me until I decided to delete them and they hid themselves. Please tell me where these files hide. Also, can’t remember where you tell suse to clear tmp files.
I don’t know the answer.
But the clear /tmp in 12.1 has a bug related to systemd
If you do this: Clear Temp Files at Boot - Blogs - openSUSE Forums
It doesn’t clear them in 12.1
But if you press F5 at the grub menu and choose systemV, the /tmp will clear.
But whether totem stores the files in /tmp I don’t know.
According to documentation I’ve read, if you are running systemd (which is default) 12.1 is now supposed to be doing some automatic tmp directory cleaning.
For those of us who are either running sysvinit or other versions of openSUSE, I think we may still have to manually clean our /tmp and /var/tmp directories.
A safe way to clean out those directories is to install and invoke the utility “tmpwatch”
You cna either invoke tmpwatch on demand or configure a cron job to do it automatically for you.
Although I wouldn’t know for sure, my guess is that if you do find out where your totem files are located (have you tried a simple search using a utility like “locate”? Or, maybe inspecting the application’s files might give you a hint?), pointing tmpwatch to that directory should probably do a good job, too.
BTW - people should know that it can be dangerous to just wipe out everything in the TMP folders… I did that recently on one machine carelessly and ended up needing to re-install KDE.

As far as I know, totem only keeps a list of the files, it does not store
the files. The media files are not touched.
If you want to erase also the media files, you have to find them and erase
them, totem is not involved in that.

Well, I searched all over and can’t find the files. Totem has about a dozen folders sprayed all over the system but, apparently, no content files. It must be going out to the internet to get them. Thanks for the tip on clearing tmp

I have no clue on how you get those files you play. If they come from links
in internet, unless you store them they will be, probably, in /tmp or in
the temporary storage of the browser. Totem should be able to tell you were
is the file that it is playing.

I checked again and couldn’t find any of the files. It’s a mystery. I rebooted after checking on the clear tmp procedure and the list of movies is still there. I purposely clicked on a bunch of video files listed in Totem “Browse” feature under the “Apple Trailers” folder and those items replaced the old items in the movie list. They did not clear on the reboot. If I click on Movie->Open Location, a web address for youtube shows up that I assume is the last video it played. Clicking “Open” on that address instantly loads the video. That’s why I think it must be stored locally somewhere. I liked having Totem work so smoothly with .wmv files, but if it is going to secretly fill up my HD, I’m going to have to uninstall it.
Find the file here
/.cache/totem/grilo/
It should be a random number .html
and in hidden /home/.
Look for a file .grl-podcasts
There may be others like .grl-bookmarks
My guess is if you keep digging based on these finds you might find the source of the stored data
Thanks caf. I found two files there, just html and no data. Similarly, I found a lot of files at usr/lib/grilo-0.1 but no data. Most of these are .so files and didn’t know if I should delete them. They don’t take up as much space as few minutes of video does. So, I guess I’ll leave them. I’m thinking I could shut off the internet and try to access one of the files. If it fails that is one answer. Still, I wouldn’t mind deleting any pointers that show I have been watching Lady Gaga videos rotfl!
