Out of ideas here.

Can we see your repos please

Thank you for your response! This new machine is just different for some odd reason from what I’m used to.

An interesting mix of repos

So the error… occurs just starting totem?
You’re not trying to play a dvd?

Can you play DVD’s with totem or SMPlayer or VLC?

Totem crashes when I open A DVD with it. Such as; insert DVD>“what to do” prompt>select “open with Totem”>Totem initializes for a split second then goes down. Never any image from the DVD.

SMplayer won’t play it either, but doesn’t crash.

Are you able to confirm if it’s specific to this particular DVD?
Have you ever been able to play it?
What about other DVD’s?

On another note. I can’t for the life of me imagine why you have qt46 repo
The kde3 repo is questionable too IMO

I tried with a different disk, and it played… sort of. There was an error, and the video was choppy with no sound.

SUSE Paste

here is the error that showed

Please run this

zypper in libdvdcss2 vlc libxine1-codecs ffmpeg lame gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly gstreamer-0_10-plugins-ugly-orig-addon totem-browser-plugin w32codec-all MPlayer smplayer gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good libxine1 libdvdplay0 libdvdread4 libdvdnav4 xine-ui libmad0 ffmpeg sox libxvidcore4 xvidcore libavcodec52 libavdevice52 libvlccore4 libvlc5 totem totem-plugin-upnp totem-plugins nautilus-totem lsb pullin-flash-player flash-player gstreamer-0_10-ffmpeg gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3 gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegdemux gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mpegmux gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-extra libquicktime0 gstreamer-0_10-plugins-bad-orig-addon

Then do this
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/Switcher%20Pics/packman%20in%20gnome.png

OK, I did it. VLC will play a DVD now just fine. Strange behavior though.
Transformers will play in VLC, and it won’t crash Totem but doesn’t load in the latter.
Thor crashes both players.

Try installing Handbrake and or k9copy
See if you can rip em

I’m installing handbrake. I won’t install k9 since it wants to pull tons of KDE junk. I don’t want the clutter. I’ll try ripping with Brasero first.

Brasero reports an IO error.
BraseroDvdcss asked to stop because of an error
error = 1
message = “Data could not be written (Input/output error)”
BraseroDvdcss stopping
Session error : Data could not be written (Input/output error) (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2862)

Brasero is a waste of space.
Handbrake is in Packman, so it should take seconds to install.

I have installed Handbrake. It freezes on every disk I try. Two out of three (available) DVDs play using VLC. Totem behavior is unchanged.

So far I haven’t had any issue with DVD’s in 12.1
Not sure what to suggest now

I’m running 11.4. 12.1 was all bad for me.

OK
11.4 is nice. So Gnome 2?

It’s not unknown for some DVD’s not to play

Correct, and I know. But why is Totem failing where VLC succeeds? I would rather use Totem since its the default and is well integrated into the desktop.

In any event, this difference is something I’d like to understand if for no other than educational reasons. Thank you for taking your time on this issue with me.

Essentially, libdvdcss is a open source library for decrypting dvd’s. Some dvd’s are notoriously difficult to unscramble.
Another complication can be region codes and settings of your DVD optical drive. On my R61 the drive was not set to a region originally and I had trouble with some DVD’s. I used windows to set the region code to PAL UK and my dvd’s played. That is IIRC, it was a few years back now.
