Toshiba with AR242x wifi card problem!

Hi guys! I’m very new to this forum, although I’ve been messing with Linux for a while…I’ve been on Ubuntu since early 2007 and a few months ago i decided to give openSUSE a chance…but there’s one little huge problem with it.

I have an Atheros AR242x on a Toshiba Satellite A135 S4527 and it doesn’t connect neither with NetworkManager or ifup…

This is driving me crazy! I’ve wasted all day working on this and nothing worked!

I’m using openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.1 by the way…

When I use NetworkManager the freaking gear spins for a while and then the gray world comes back…

When I run “iwconfig” the wlan detects the network…and nothing else! No connection whatsoever…

So PLEASE help me! If you need any more info about my setup just ask! But I’ll be very grateful for any info about this…

And I also tried to install madwifi and it didn’t work…apparently it doesn’t work with openSUSE 11.1…or I’m just too stupid to find a suitable version for it.

I still don’t know how such a great distro can be so mean. A thing as simple as this becomes a disaster…even PuppyLinux detected my card right out of the box. I really want to use openSUSE (I’m dual-booting with Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex) but this wireless problem is really bothering me.

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried the compat-wireless drivers ? sometimes using this driver works

Andy

Hello and thanks for the reply.

But I’m afraid I don’t understand. What are the compat-wireless drivers? Are they inside the Software Management, or do I need to compile them or something?

What really bothers me is that in openSUSE 11.0 the card wasn’t even recognized and I never got around to fix it…Now in openSUSE 11.1 the card is recognized but not used.

Another weird thing that happened was that my wireless network wasn’t detected by NetworkManager…I had to put the configuration manually and even then the network was useless…

I can really use all the help I can get…Thanks again!

Hello again…

Well after reading a lot I finally installed the compat-wireless drivers using a tarball for kernel 2.6.27.x … It installed smoothly and when I did the “sudo make load” command my wireless network was recognized instantly by NetworkManager and the signal strength bar appeared with no problems…but when I disconnected the LAN cable I had on my laptop and restarted it to check, everything fell apart…

The wireless was lost again…

Then I issued the “sudo make load” command again to load the drivers and it didn’t work…

In fact when I logged back into Ubuntu the wi-fi card was dead there too! And I alo used a LiveUSB of Ubuntu I have and the wi-fi card wasn’t even recognized…

Somehow it got fixed miraculously…I just turned my computer off and went away to cool off and when I came back a few hours later it was fixed in Ubuntu…weird…:sarcastic:

As far as openSUSE goes, I still have no luck with wi-fi…although some people claim that AR242x cards work right out of the box with kernel 2.6.27.9 apparently it doesn’t with my laptop…

So I’m still in the dark here…I still need help.

Thanks in advance! :nerd:
