bit more info please, as it may help in diagnosing & providing useful help for you. A quick look at the stickie at the start of the wireless forum will give you an idea of what we require

I haven’t tried any driver since i don’t know the exact model of my card
hmm, don’t see anything related to wireless devices, is it plugged in/ switched on ? can you post the results of this command /sbin/lspci -v so we get a more verbose output
Andy
There is a switch that when it’s turned on there’s a light that appears only when using vista. In ubuntu, suse etc the switch is on but there is no light. is hte command right, because i get “No such file or directory”. I’m using a live cd
command is correct, best thing to do, is switch it on,so the hardware is recognized & then run the command ( copy/paste if necessary )
Andy
The switch is on. Still getting that error
can you point me to a web-site with your system specs ? might be able to find out from there
Andy
ok, having a darn good look around, i have discovered it could have one of two chip-sets.
Atheros = you need madwifi drivers madwifi.org - Trac
Realtek = RTL
try them one at a time
Andy
I installed suse 11 and the command you told me worked. Here are the results:

Wierd, still no sign of your wireless device i suggest you try the drivers i linked to in my previous post. try them one at a time & see what happens
Andy
Any idea how to install drivers? I have no idea…
for madwifi, just add the repo & then install via software management. for the rtl, you will have to compile them. i have my own mini how-to ( basically to remind myself as i’m getting a bit forgetful ) Howto’s

There it is.
First post! Hopefully it’s understandable:
Download this driver from Realtek and extract it to your Desktop with Ark
In the Win98 folder, open the net8187b.inf file with KWrite and look for this section:
;;****************************************************************************
;; IDs for 98SE/ME/2K/XP
;;****************************************************************************
[Realtek]
%RTL8187B.DeviceDesc% = RTL8187B.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8187&REV_0200
%RTL8187B.DeviceDesc% = RTL8187B.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8189&REV_0200
Add the line:
%RTL8187B.DeviceDesc% = RTL8187B.ndi, USB\VID_0BDA&PID_8197&REV_0200
Now comes the hard part, which you’ll have to do in the terminal. Type su to login as root and navigate back to the Win98 folder. Once you’re there, type the following commands one-by-one:
ndiswrapper -i net8187b.inf
ndiswrapper -m
modprobe ndiswrapper
You’ll also want to go into this YaST thingie, click System, and enter the /etc/sysconfig Editor. You should see a variable under System -> Kernel called MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT. Type ndiswrapper in there as well, and click Finish.
Should work great!
Thanks mate. I’ll try it as soon as I can, because i’m in the middle of the university exam session, and I will get back to you with details.
Thanks again
