I need some help getting my webcam to work, too. What program would I use, etc? Yes, I am at stage 1.

Kopete should be able to use the camera. I have not tried it in an actual chat, but it the config options opens the camera and gives you video. To take snapshots or record video I use a Gnome app called cheese.
The camera is autodetected and should work out of the box with the above mentioned programs.
I have loaded up the Kopete program. The screen is green. I went to Video, Options, and clicked on the only option that had adjust option.
I will search for a Cheese application. I just did a search for cheese. I see that it needs Gnome. I’m using KDE.
But, to start the Kopete, I really didn’t see that option.
Suggestions welcome!

The output of lspci is completely useless for a USB-webcam, lsusb is the command to show the camera.

I have a Toshiba A205 laptop with the same webcam. I use gnome. But, i do use kopete for the few times i need the webcam when I am IM’ing someone. I was unable to get the 3.5.x series to work with it. Since I use gnome I enabled kde4:Factory and got the kopete from there which works fine.
I had originally tried to install the gnome format. I ended up choosing KDE. Maybe I’ll have to go back to the gnome. But, how do other things work, like video, sound, dvd, cdrom? Thank you.
