Torn screen when at 4k@120hz after Tumbleweed 2024-10-05

Hello!

I run Tumbleweed on a mini pc which is connected to a TV and which I usually run at 4k (3840x2160) resolution and 120hz refresh rate.

After I ran a dist upgrade on 2024-10-05 the screen is no longer displayed properly at this resolution and refresh rate combo.
The screen looks split in half, with the right half looking stretched and purple. See photo: openSUSE Paste

If I reduce the refresh rate to 60hz, it displays normally, but feels really sluggish (likely because I always ran at it 120hz and got used to it like that).

DP or HDMI?

I’m using HDMI because the TV doesn’t have any other type of input.
The PC itself does have DP, but I don’t have a 4k monitor to test with.

PN50 supports up to 8K resolution at 60 Hz or up to four displays simultaneously*, with up to 4K resolution at 60 Hz

The best you can do at this time is use a DisplayPort (DP) 1.4 to HDMI 2.1 adapter, though Club3D’s initial version of their adapter is a dumpster fire and should be avoided for now until they fix the issues. Renoir only supports HDMI 2.0 but it does offer DP 1.4. DSC is a form of lossless compression so you will see no difference in visual fidelity. But you will never seen it used in your application because DP 1.4 displays up to 4K at 120 Hz before DSC even begins to kick in:

Also HDMI 2.x has limited support in Linux because HDMI Forum wants licensing, but Linux uses open drivers for AMD.

Nothing obvious to me from inxi explains the errant behavior. Please susepaste Xorg.0.log from /var/log or ~/.local/share/xorg/ if it exists.

You might try force reinstalling libdrm_amdgpu1 and kernel-firmware-amdgpu to see if it helps.

@Svyatko’s reply does suggest you are OOL @4k120. Was this actually OK before the upgrade?

I don’t know, but that’s how it used to work before said update.
I even rolled that upgrade back and it fixed the issue i.e. I was able to run 4k@120hz just fine again.

I’m mainly trying to figure out what exactly broke this functionality during the upgrade, like was it the kernel upgrade, or Mesa, or something else.

You might try force reinstalling libdrm_amdgpu1 and kernel-firmware-amdgpu to see if it helps.

I just ran zypper install -f libdrm_amdgpu1 kernel-firmware-amdgpu.
It didn’t suggest a reboot, but I’ll reboot anyway and report back.

Edit: Back from reboot. The issue is sadly still present.

Create bug report.

ILL you can achieve 4k@120 Hz with HDMI 2.0, AFAIK Renoir (and Vega) supports HDMI 2.0b. But signal needs to be 8 bit and 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, not 4:4:4, and not 10 bit (HDR).

I recognize nothing obviously helpful in the log.

Desktops include Plasma, Cinnamon, XFCE, Gnome & the like. Use an X terminal, e.g. in Plasma, run it in Konsole.

One more possible help. Show output from: sudo journalctl -b | grep aile. Likely it will be short enough to paste directly instead of susepasting if you wish.

Given this appears to be regression, a bug report seems indicated.

when 4K@120Hz works (rolled back OS).

With updated OS with broken 4K@120Hz mode try to upgrade system packages - use newer

  • kernel from kernel:stable

and

  • Mesa 3D from X11:XOrg

repos.

If you report a bug, you might be asked to try backleveling to version(s) that are installed in your working snapshot. Software up to a month or so old may be found on the mirrors here. If it was mine I’d be curious enough to try the older kernel-firmware-amdgpu (which may require initrd rebuild) at least, as it wouldn’t require any dependent packages accompany it. Other package or packages might require direction of the assignee of any bug report you make, unless you are an expert in working with dependencies.
