I’m trying to install Torguard app (VPN) and root access is not possible: Password won’t work = su -. Someone can help please on how to install the app?
Not familiar with opensuse, made a fresh install today. Would like to know about things to do after a fresh install…
is that a GUI application?
in that case you need to run
kdesu </path/to/app> or gnomesu </path/to/app>
how are you installing it?
they seam to have an rpm try zypper
for 64bit
zypper in http://updates.torguard.biz/Software/Linux/torguard-latest-amd64.rpm
if you are running a 32bit TW
zypper in http://updates.torguard.biz/Software/Linux/torguard-latest-i386.rpm
I am not sure if your main question is something about installing a product, or not being able to use su - to “become root”?
The latter would prevent you from doing I_A’s suggestions also.
Please always remember to SHOW what you do and not (only) tell. Thus show your su - and what happens, by copy/paste of prompt, command, output and next prompt in one sweep from your terminal window in between CODE tags in a post here. You get the CODE tags by clicking on the # button in the tool bar of the post editor.
Only so you can inform us exactly about what you did and got without adding to much talking.
Thanks for replying,
Indeed, Torguard is a GUI for selecting VPN servers or cities. Here’s the problem I deal with constantly:
ss@linux-2o2k:~> zypper in http://updates.torguard.biz/Software/Linux/torguard-latest-amd64.rpm
Root privileges are required for installing or uninstalling packages.
ss@linux-2o2k:~> su -
Password:
su: Authentication failure
ss@linux-2o2k:~>
I also have 2 errors on startup about CPU frequency: I don’t find the way to paste a screenshot from the picture folder? URL???
Then you most probably did not type the correct root password.
That is what I get when I do the same as you and do not type the correct root password. It waits for a few seconds and then gives the same error message.
During the fresh install I was ask for one password only. Then, what is the root password?
Default is the same as the first user. There is an option to set a different password for root in the installer but you have to read the screens to notice it. Check the box then be asked for root
Also passwords are case sensitive so be sure you are using the correct case for the PW.
I kept the choice to default and I do believe the only PW is also for root. Is there a way to reset the PW? Are you telling me to redo the installation. It is my first fresh install of Opensuse and Authentification is a heavy task everywhere I go. Even posting on this website requires an identification or question to answer.
When you did NOT go for a different password for root, the root password is the same as that of the first user. The obvious question is then: can you use that (one and only) password to log in as tha first user? That looks a bit like a silly question because you apparently are loged in, but some people choose for password-less login.
I don’t have a login PW, it is set to automatic login.
You probably mean that the userr has a password, but that it is normaly not used because of automatic login.
So please check if that password works for the user: logout and login again.

When trying to run it, I have this message: Enlightenment was unable to run the application:
/usr/bin/torguard
The application failed to start.
Will reboot to see if it works now.
Edit: I have the same error after reboot.
You better start a new thread for this because you have a different problem now that needs a different title to draw the attention of those who know something about the product.
And do not forget to copy/paste between code tags prompt, command, output (error message in this case) and next prompt between CODE tags when you want to ahow that it goes wrong.
This issue remains, the root one was solved by this Kernel:
uname -r
4.11.2-2.g6088b54-default
