Todays KDE Factory Update desktop problems

I have installed the lastest KDE factory updates, all installed cleanly.

System boots up ok, when I log in all I get is a checkerboard pattern on my desktop. I have deleted plasmarc & plasma-appletsrc - still the same.

The only way I can execute commands is by ALT-F2 and tying in the box. Firefox, yast etc run ok in this mode.

Any ideas please

Thanks

Had exactly the same, please see KDE 4.2 RC1 - Blank Desktop - openSUSE Forums

posted it 3 minutes after you… took me over 3 minutes to type.

I have read of issues today. So I’m holding fire on this update.

Not aware of any solution. I think others have tried the usual re-name of .kde4
But may be worth a try.

Same problem here. I changed the Qt repo to Qt44 which did nothing. Removing ~/.kde4 did not help either. No clue what to try next. Wait for an update I guess…

You could disable Factory and roll back to stable

Yes, but that feels a bit overly defensive this close to the 4.2 release - I’ll just live in IceWM until the dust settles.

I’d recommend that to anyone else reading this in time.

Unless they want to try fixing it of course…

The issue has been fixed. Excellent work!

Well, at least partly. Right-clicking on the desktop still doesn’t have any effect and trying to lock the plasma applets crashes plasma.

No crashes here. I started from a virgin .kde4, though.

I’m not having any crashes. But I do have the checkerboard, corrupt, distorted image when it is logging in. This happens before and after the nvidia boot splash.

sigh I am also having issues with my sound and dvd drives not working when I plug in a joystick.
11.1 thinks my joystick is a soundcard and breaks dvd drive? - openSUSE Forums

I upgraded KDE4 RC1 overnight (Australia Time) and found the system faster than it has ever been. I was surprised to find people having so much problem with the last update.

Anyone who had the checkered board first and has had another upgrade since then that solved it?

Would be good to let the rest of us know.

No problem here folks :\

Nor here (Intel video). Is that another KDE4/NVidia problem?

Uwe

I got a NVIDIA card at least and have the problem… anyone that has one and is problem free?

I got a nVidia card too. Have 180.22 driver and running 4.2 Factory. NO PROBLEM. :\

I’m not having any problems with KDE 4 but some of the YaST modules are acting funny. If I try to add a repo in YaST2 sw_single, it quits. If I try to edit my users or groups, it quits.

If the software install tool asks for the dvd, I click retry and it quits. Maybe this has something to do with running QT45.

Anyone else getting this?

Well aren’t I the brave one…

They fixed something it seems, tried it again (third time) and it’s working.
I did have to rename my .kde4 folder though as before I did that I simply got a black screen with “Plasma has crashed” and starting plasma again resulted in yet another insta crash.

So…

  1. Enable factory repositories ]All packages > Update if newer version is available]log out*]Get commandline up*]mv .kde4 .kde4old
    *]startx and enjoy!

I’m glad it works again… as KDE4.1 looks really… rough once you get used to 4.2. First time I got a openSUSE startbutton in 4.2 btw, no more ugly blue KDE logo.

Yeah!

Also, “YaST” “Install Software” “System Information” icons have been moved to “Computer” section in kickoff menu.

Now thats what I call polish :good:
