Since Ubuntu decided to abandon gnome and also not support my hardware anymore. accelerated graphics were out of whack and kinda buggy with Debian lots of manual corrections and I still haven’t got it right yet. So I can play open arena and my windows games in wine. My question is simply this. Is your package management packman similar to apt-get will my transition be relatively painless moving from a .deb to an .rpm pkg mngmt system? I installed openSuse11.4 within Virtualbox and it is gorgeous. Please advise.
The rough equivalent to apt-get is zypper, and the functionality is similar but there will be points of difference. However you may prefer to use YaST as the front end.
Packman doesn’t come into this. Packman is a repository.
packman is simply one of the repositories available out there in the world
for RPM-based things like OpenSUSE. apt-get is a command in Debian land
to pull down packages from a Debian repository; a similar command in
OpenSUSE is zypper. OpenSUSE has tons of software available for it both
in RPM format as well as others, and it seems that often .pkgs can convert
directly to .rpms using alien (a command made for the task) though I think
most of the time this is not necessary.
Anyway, make the switch if you’re not happy with the way Ubuntu is going.
In OpenSUSE 11.4 you can use Gnome (same as Ubuntu), KDE, LXDE or XFCE
(lots of options). Hardware acceleration usually works out of the box.
Ask questions in appropriate forums and otherwise enjoy the ride.
Good luck.

I switched from Kubuntu to openSuse and for me the transition is good. openSuse uses newer packages but gives more importance to stability than bleeding edge. After all you would find yourself wanting the latest version of KDE not the X.org when you want to have some work actually done.

You already received anwsers to your question, but this little note forces
me to ask you a question: Which hardware are you speaking about?
In general the hardware supported is not so much a question of the
distribution which you use but a question of your kernel, of available
proprietary drivers, the version of your X server. So if newer combinations
of that have problems with your hardware you will sooner or later have the
same problems with any other distro. Just my 2ct.
