Time limits for the kids

Hello all

The situation is like this. My older children have a linux desktop in their room. Now that the schools have started they abuse the use of the machines and we have a situation at home>:).

While trying to find a solution to place restrains to their access accounts and limit their time on line I came across the pam_time module bus I was unable to make it work.

I tryied to change the time.conf and login.conf files but didnt make it.

Please help me before I get a storke:( or kill my son or daughter

Regards

The systems are a machine with opensuse 11.0 and another one with opensuse 10.3 (both intel based)

A bad idea. Put your computers in a public space at the house. At
least until the self discipline is present enough for kids to police
themselves (a difficult thing btw). Keep computers out in the open
helps everyone (not just kids) to do the “right” things when
online.

Well… you could to some kind of pam limits thing… certainly.
You’d have to have root on their boxes… and they can’t have it.
Another thing is to setup MAC based limitations on your router
(I’m assuming wireless). Many of those appliances have a feature
to limit access by MAC address to certain hours. That just
curbs Internet access of course.

Well… not sure why you messed with login.conf… but this
article might help with time.conf…

If it’s a serious matter… turn off the wireless… move all
computer to a public place with wired connections. An open
door makes people think twice about the “evil” they are about
to do.

I’ve been there with 4 kids all now adults and have left home.
Anyway i honestly think the best way is to try reason with them not easy i know but always the best in the long run.
Open doors also help thought kids are entitled to privacy.
You could also set up the firewall in you router. At home we agreed that illegal downloads porn etc were banned and were blocked using key words in the firewall.
And as suggested below you may also be able to set time limits in your router
Our reasoning was as long as you live at home you have to abide to certain rules.
Good luck
