Time for a change?

As we have a new naming convention for OpenSUSE pre-releases, shouldn’t the
name of this newsgroup be changed? Perhaps the “-beta” could simply be
dropped or how about “opensuse.org.help.prerelease-milestone-x”?

Graham, I’ve raised the issue with the Mods. Darn good point, Thanks;)

I don’t see the point in having one for every milestone. I know that web
forum users like that, but they can’t come up with descriptive subject
lines anyway.

??? It’s just a name. I would rather have things stay relatively
constant then changing them everytime you turn around.

What if a few years down the road openSUSE decides to call them
prerelease-beta’s??

I wonder what else I could do to indicate that I was attempting to be
slightly humorous here? Obviously, a single smiley wasn’t enough.

As it looks as though everyone wants to be really serious about this, I
think that dropping the “-beta” is sufficient. Even without the change of
naming system, “prerelease-beta” seems rather tautological and “prerelease”
would seem sufficient - and where is “prerelease-alpha”?

We Mods discussed the issue and feel that the forum name should remain for a number of reasons:

  • We think “beta” and “pre-release” to be rather descriptive, especially for the new folks coming from other distro(s),
    and range to:
  • While the WEB side change would be rather easy, there is an impact on the NNTP side fix (deleting and adding forums).

All of this could be done, of course, but, the gain does not outweigh the pain;)

Thanks for raising the issue,

Jim

Sorry… I fell for it. I mean this isn’t just usenet anymore… we have people posting via forums. I don’t expect the level of experience to be all that great anymore.
