Just recently, when I try to save an attachment to a mail in thunderbird, I cannot save the file in a folder. If I right click and save, then the file opens eg if I try to save a wav file, it opens in vlc. Same thing with a jpg - opens in gimp. Maybe this is not in fact a thunderbird problem, but that of another program.
Any ideas?

those things that you wish to save to the hard drive must be marked as
“Always ask” in the Thunderbird setup applet at:
Edit > Preferences > Attachments > Incoming

dd
Thanks - that works and I can now save the file
- but thunderbird has an open or save option. When I used to press save, it use to go straight to the save dialog.
Unless you have set it up as you have said, the save option doesn’t work - and now with the “always ask” there is an extra dialog box asking if you want to open or save.
Something has changed recently, but I can’t put my finger on it. I tried downgrading thunderbird from 13 to 12 and there is no difference in this behaviour.
